Inspiration

All of us share the common experience of caring for elderly family members. Many of them face mobility issues and require special accommodations, especially when traveling or visiting unfamiliar places. We realized that navigation resources for people with disabilities are limited, making it difficult to plan routes that cater to their specific needs. This inspired us to create a platform that helps individuals with mobility impairments identify accessible paths, locate essential services, and avoid physical barriers along their journey.

What it does

The project utilizes the user's current location or a chosen starting point and maps the most efficient accessible path to a desired destination. It also displays local hotspots for quick access. It also displays descriptions about the route, including distance and the time it takes to travel. Additionally, there are descriptors about the location's accessibility rating, including services and the impact of environmental factors.

How we built it

We used Github to track different versions of our code as we worked on it. We had two team members working on the back-end and two team members working on the front-end.

Challenges we ran into

For the sake of time and efficiency, our team developed the front-end and back-end of our project separately. The challenge with this approach is merging both halves of the project afterward. As we worked, our overall design for both the front-end and back-end would stray from the original design as we faced problems that demanded alternative solutions. Thus, certain back-end endpoints may not be ideal for usage by our front-end team. It was tedious having to make adaptations piece by piece as we had to ensure both halves fit together seamlessly.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Having a working product completed in a short time span.

What we learned

Learned how to delegate tasks in order to complete a much larger project. Learned back-end and front-end development and how to merge the two.

What's next for RoamAble

Greater location coverage. Addressing additional disabilities. More integration into the community providing additional features and details.
