About BODAmtaani

Inspiration

BODAmtaani was inspired by the everyday challenges faced by millions of Kenyans who rely on boda bodas for transportation, deliveries, and essential errands. While many ride-hailing platforms exist, they often focus only on transport and may not fully address the needs of local communities or small businesses.

We wanted to build a platform that goes beyond getting people from one place to another. Our vision was to create a community-driven ecosystem where customers can access trusted riders for rides, parcel delivery, food delivery, pharmacy delivery, shopping errands, and water or gas delivery—all from one app. At the same time, we wanted to give local businesses greater visibility and create new earning opportunities for riders and customers.

What We Built

BODAmtaani is a mobile platform that connects customers with verified local riders using real-time location technology.

To encourage community participation, we also introduced an Earn With Us program. Customers and riders can submit quality photos of restaurants, cafés, attractions, markets, and other local places. After moderation, contributors receive rewards while helping others discover great locations across Kenya. This also gives local businesses an affordable way to improve their online presence through featured listings and in-app promotions.

The system was designed to support nationwide expansion while maintaining fast response times and a secure user experience.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was balancing simplicity with functionality. We wanted an application that remained easy to use while supporting multiple services within a single platform.

Another challenge was designing a pricing model that is fair for both riders and customers. Instead of relying entirely on fixed fares, we introduced a negotiation model with AI-generated fare suggestions to encourage fair pricing.

Building a scalable dispatch system also required careful planning. Riders can operate anywhere in Kenya, while the platform intelligently matches nearby riders using GPS location, availability, ratings, and performance history.

Designing offline support for users in areas with unreliable internet connectivity was another important consideration, ensuring requests can be cached locally and synchronized automatically once the connection is restored.

What We Learned

This project reinforced the importance of designing technology around real community needs.

We learned that mobility platforms can do much more than transport people—they can strengthen local economies, support small businesses, create earning opportunities, and improve access to essential services.

We also gained valuable insights into building scalable mobile applications, integrating location services, implementing secure digital payments, designing real-time systems, and creating user experiences that work well even in challenging network conditions.

Future Plans

Our vision for BODAmtaani is to become Kenya's trusted community mobility platform.
