RideSafe: Project Story

Inspiration

The inspiration for RideSafe came from the growing need for enhanced rider safety on roads. With the increasing number of accidents due to overspeeding, negligence, and lack of safety measures, we wanted to create a system that could prevent accidents and protect lives. The idea of integrating smart features like helmet alerts, overspeed alerts, obstacle detection, and emergency crash alerts came from real-life situations we observed, where timely alerts or actions could have saved lives.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we learned: • The importance of combining hardware and software for a seamless experience. • How to work with sensors like ultrasonic sensors, GPS modules, and accelerometers. • The basics of computer vision using OpenCV for helmet detection. • The significance of user-friendly mobile app development using Flutter. • How to manage and sync real-time data using Firebase and Bluetooth communication.

How We Built the Project 1. Hardware Setup: • Integrated ultrasonic sensors for obstacle detection. • Used a camera for helmet alerts and obstacle recognition. • Added an accelerometer and gyroscope for crash detection. 2. Software Development: • Developed an AI-powered helmet detection system using OpenCV. • Built a mobile app using Flutter for live tracking, overspeed alerts, and crash notifications. • Used Firebase for real-time data storage and Twilio for emergency SMS alerts. 3. Testing and Calibration: • Tested the system in different environments to ensure accuracy. • Calibrated sensors to avoid false positives for obstacle and crash detection.

Challenges We Faced • Hardware Integration: Ensuring smooth communication between all sensors and the microcontroller was challenging. • Real-Time Processing: Managing and processing sensor and camera data in real-time without lags required optimization. • Helmet Detection Accuracy: Training the AI model to recognize helmets accurately in various conditions (e.g., lighting, angles) took significant effort. • Mobile App Syncing: Ensuring the app received live updates consistently from the bike system was complex.

Despite the challenges, we successfully built RideSafe as a comprehensive safety solution for bike riders. The project not only improved our technical skills but also gave us a sense of accomplishment in creating something impactful for society.
