Inspiration
We often admire nature's beauty without understanding the environmental changes happening around us. Forests, rivers, oceans, and even our cities are facing ecological challenges that deserve our attention. I wanted to create a platform that helps people reconnect with the places around them and understand why protecting our planet matters. That idea became RESEE HER — a reminder to look at nature again, this time with greater awareness.
What it does
RESEE HER is an AI-powered environmental discovery platform that helps people explore locations around the world and learn about their environmental context.
Explore: Search for places such as forests, rivers, reefs, and cities.
Her Story: Interact with an AI guide to learn about environmental topics.
Understand: Discover general environmental challenges associated with places and ecosystems.
Respond: Explore practical ideas for caring for the environment.
Resee: Revisit a place with a deeper understanding of its ecological significance.
How we built it
We built the frontend using React and TypeScript. OpenStreetMap and its Nominatim geocoding service support location discovery. The AI guide uses Groq through a Supabase Edge Function, allowing users to explore environmental questions conversationally. Location imagery and fallback handling help make the experience more engaging.
Challenges we ran into
Connecting location search, AI responses, and environmental guidance into one cohesive experience was a key challenge. We also worked on handling different place categories, missing location information, and image fallbacks so that the experience remains useful across a variety of searches.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud to have turned an environmental awareness idea into a published, interactive website. RESEE HER brings location discovery, conversational AI, and environmental education together in an experience designed to encourage curiosity and thoughtful action.
What we learned
This project helped us explore how frontend development, geocoding, APIs, and AI integration can work together. We also learned the importance of handling errors, communicating limitations, and designing an experience around a real-world problem rather than technology alone.
What's next for RESEE HER
We hope to improve the accuracy and depth of location-specific environmental information, expand practical action recommendations, and explore ways to incorporate verified environmental datasets. Our long-term vision is to help more people understand the places they depend on and feel empowered to protect them.
RESEE HER provides educational context and general guidance; it does not currently claim to monitor environmental conditions in real time.
