Inspiration
We're two Sudanese students who lost our homes to the war. We know what it means to be displaced, and we know that millions of Sudanese are still living through it. We wanted to use our skills on a problem that is personal to us.
What it does
Reach Sudan asks a simple question: when people are waiting for aid, how much does every hour cost?
We simulate food distribution during displacement crises, showing how delays and transport limits affect communities. Users can compare different strategies and find out which changes could get more food to people who need it.
How we built it
We built the frontend with React and TypeScript, and the backend with Python and FastAPI. The main part is a linear programming optimizer that calculates how to distribute limited food under real constraints like transport capacity and delivery times. We also integrated Gemini for natural-language scenarios and Monte Carlo simulations to explore uncertainty.
Challenges we ran into
Humanitarian data is messy. Reports arrive late and population figures change. We had to rethink parts of our model to make sure we weren't giving it knowledge from the future.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We built a working tool that lets people test decisions and see their consequences. We turned something we've experienced personally into a technical project.
What we learned
An algorithm is only as good as the information it receives.* Having the best mathematical solution means little if you're solving the wrong problem. We learned to question our assumptions as much as our code.
What's next for Reach Sudan
We want to speak with humanitarian workers, improve the model with better operational data, and find out what it would take to make Reach Sudan useful on the ground.
