Have you ever thought of medical students during their training as a huge unused resource of highly trained health care professionals?

In Germany, around 60.000 students are between their medical preliminary examination (Physikum) and certification (Approbation), and 10.000 students finish their medicine certificate every year. Medical students and medical doctors during their specialisation are training with thousands of fictional case studies for up to 5 or 10 years. In this long time period, they could also solve thousands of real case studies to train themselves, help patients, collect credits for their CV and gain monetary rewards.

At the same time, many patients just want to get a quick diagnosis or ask a question to a doctor, but have to wait weeks for an appointment and hours in the waiting room, which is not just highly inefficient but also infectious due to circulating infectious agents.

We want to leverage the huge unused human capital of medical students in their training to optimise workload and efficiency in medical practices, in order to replace all needless medical practice visits taking less than 5 minutes, reduce practice overflow and waiting time, as well as infections in the waiting room.

What it does

Patients create a MedQuest in our MedQuest app with their lifestyle information like diabetes, high blood pressure, smoking, alcohol consumption and activity, as well as their symptoms. This patient data is anonymously sent to a medical student between the preliminary medical examination (Physikum) and the certification (Approbation), who marks him-/herself available via his own version of the MedQuest app.

The medical student then uses the patient information to create a pre-diagnosis and submit it. This pre-diagnosis is sent to a certified doctor, who makes the final diagnosis with the help of the pre-diagnosis provided by the medical student.

The certified doctor receives a payment for his/her service, which the patient provides. In addition, the certified doctor rates the pre-diagnosis of the medical student, before submitting his diagnosis to the patient including treatment options and potential doctor visit recommendations, if necessary.

The patient receives a diagnosis on his condition or question within several hours and rates the diagnosis. Thereby, the medical student, as well as the certified doctor get rated and collect credits and successful cases (gamification) to distinguish themselves from other health care professionals in an application.

How we built it

We collaborated on a cloud platform, rapidly developing variations of UI wireframes and finally creating a detailed interactive prototype together on Figma, utilising various design resources, to achieve a nearly final product in terms of the user interface. Then we created a presentation and recorded relevant explanations, which finally concluded in the video we submitted.

Challenges we ran into

We are still looking for a backend app developer to finalise our MedQuest app.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're very proud of having built our first MedQuest app prototype in 6 hours.

What we learned

We realized what can be built with three people in 24 hours and potentially change the future of healthcare forever.

What's next for MedQuest

We will look for funding opportunities to develop our prototype, for example, in the BadenCampus Start-up Lab.
