Prakriti Mitra: Our Environment Intelligent Companion

Inspiration

The idea behind Prakriti Mitra came from a simple observation: we often need different applications to understand the environment around us. We use one app for weather, another for air quality, another for navigation, and different sources for disaster alerts and reporting local problems. I wanted to bring these features together in one place and make environmental information easier for everyone to access and use.

I initially developed Climate Mitra for the Bengaluru Climate Summit 2026 Vibeathon, where the project won. That experience motivated me to expand the idea into Prakriti Mitra, a platform that connects environmental awareness, smart navigation, community participation, and emergency information.

My goal is to help people not only understand their surroundings but also make better decisions based on the environmental conditions around them.

What Does Prakriti Mitra Do?

Prakriti Mitra is a web-based platform designed to help people understand their environment and take steps towards a more sustainable future.

Some of its main features include:

Environmental Information: Access weather conditions and air quality information to better understand local environmental conditions. Disaster Alerts: Access information related to cyclones, earthquakes, and other emergencies. Eco Maps: Explore navigation routes with environmental factors such as air quality and pollution exposure in mind, alongside regular navigation. Multilingual Navigation: Explore routes, different transportation options, and nearby places through a more accessible navigation experience. Environmental Reporting: Report problems such as improper waste disposal using photographs and location information. Green Community: Encourage people to participate in environmental awareness and sustainability activities. Emergency Assistance: Find essential services such as hospitals, pharmacies, police stations, and other emergency facilities.

The idea is to make these services available through a single platform instead of asking users to switch between multiple applications.

How I Built It

I built Prakriti Mitra as a web application using Python and Flask. I integrated available weather, air quality, and mapping services to provide environmental information and navigation features. I also explored AI-powered assistance to make information easier for users to understand.

One of the main ideas behind the project is:

Sense → Collect → Process → Analyse → Inform → Act

This represents the approach I want to develop further by combining environmental data, intelligent analysis, and community participation. The integration of physical IoT sensors and some advanced predictive capabilities is still part of the project's future development.

Challenges I Faced

Building Prakriti Mitra was not just about adding features. The real challenge was making different services work together in a way that would be useful to people.

Integrating multiple APIs, handling differences in available data, and making navigation more environmentally aware required considerable thought and experimentation. I also had to consider how to make the platform understandable and accessible to people who speak different languages.

Another challenge was managing the gap between the overall vision and what could realistically be implemented with the available time and resources. Some features still need further integration and testing, which has helped me identify where the project needs improvement.

What I Learned

While developing Prakriti Mitra, I gained practical experience in web development, API integration, mapping technologies, and AI-assisted applications. I also learned that building a useful environmental platform requires more than collecting data. The information must be understandable, relevant, and helpful in making real-world decisions.

Most importantly, I realised that technology can contribute to environmental sustainability by helping people become more aware of their surroundings and encouraging them to take action.

What's Next?

I want to expand Prakriti Mitra by integrating low-cost IoT sensors for environmental monitoring, improving climate prediction capabilities, exploring water-quality monitoring, and strengthening community-based environmental reporting.

My long-term vision is to make Prakriti Mitra a reliable environmental companion for residents, students, travellers, and visitors to India. I want it to help people understand environmental conditions, prepare for potential risks, and make more informed everyday decisions.

With Prakriti Mitra, my aim is simple: make environmental information easier to understand, connect people with their communities, and turn awareness into action for a greener, more climate-resilient India.
