Inspiration
Penguins Jump was inspired by classic endless vertical jumpers that are easy to play but hard to master and also Andrew Douglas, guide - how to build 2D Game Lenses for Snapchat with Lens Studio. I wanted to create a fun and polished 2D game that feels responsive and lively, using sound and animation to give players satisfying feedback for every action.
What it does
Penguins Jump is an endless vertical platformer where the player controls a penguin and climbs upward by bouncing across platforms. The world scrolls downward as the player ascends, the score increases in meters, and new platforms are continuously generated. Sound effects and animations enhance player feedback, making jumps, movement, and game-over moments feel impactful.
How we built it
The game is built as a 2D experience with touch-based horizontal movement. Platforms spawn within a vertical band and are recycled as the player climbs to ensure smooth performance. Player movement is physics-driven, with gravity applied continuously and upward motion triggered when landing on platforms or the starting floor. Animations and sound effects were added to improve player feedback: Jump sound plays on every successful bounce Game over sound triggers when the player falls below the threshold Blink animation gives the penguin more personality and life The score is calculated based on vertical distance climbed: Score=yhighest−ystart
Challenges we ran into
Balancing gameplay while syncing sound effects and animations with physics events was a key challenge. Ensuring that jump sounds, blink animations, and game-over audio triggered at the right moments without delay required careful event handling. Difficulty balancing and smooth game resets were also important challenges
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Smooth, responsive touch controls. Endless platform generation. Integrated sound effects for jumps and game over. Character animations that add personality and visual feedback. Clean game-over flow with leaderboard integration.
What we learned
This project strengthened our understanding of combining gameplay mechanics with audio and animation to create a more engaging player experience. We learned how small details like sound timing and idle animations can significantly improve game feel.
What's next for Penguins Jump game
Future updates may include more character animations, additional sound effects, power-ups, new platform types, and visual themes. Expanding leaderboard features and adding achievements could further increase replayability.
