Inspiration

Its cuffing season, where dating challenges abound with navigating the double struggle of finding love as well as finding a friend for your dog. It’s time to find your Pawfect One!

Imagine matching not just with a romantic partner but also with someone who shares a love for your own four-legged friends. Our application uses dog personalities to bring like-minded people together. Chopik's study challenges the stability of dog personalities, showing they change like humans, revealing parallels with owners. (Sexton 2022).

Create detailed dog profiles, match personality preferences, and discover owners with similar traits and lifestyles. Let your dogs be the icebreakers, eliminating awkward small talk. Your dog gains a friend, and you might find a romantic connection. Let’s connect hearts and paws and say goodbye to separate searches for a partner and a pet friend!

Connect Fur-real!

What it does

Pawfect One is a web application designed to connect dog owners in their quest for companionship – both for themselves and their furry friends. Users navigate through profiles, much like a dating app, to find a compatible dog that aligns with their own and sparks interest. Upon a match, the dog's profile is revealed, along with its owner's information. The app prompts users to suggest a nearby park for a potential double date between their dogs and themselves. A chat function facilitates communication, and users can customize settings, such as brand, personality, and activity level, to ensure the perfect match for both canine and human companionship.

How we built it

Our website is built with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in Visual Studio Code, along with the creative finesse of Figma, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop. Beginning with the creation of HTML pages, we utilized CSS for design edits and incorporated JavaScript for animations and enhanced functionalities. Figma served as our creative canvas allowing us to use our UX/UI skills to build an interface that creates an aesthetic appeal with user-friendly functionality. Additionally, we integrated the Google Places API through the Google Cloud Platform, enriching our application with dynamic and relevant information. This combination of technologies and creative tools has resulted in a cohesive and visually captivating frontend, offering users an engaging and intuitive web experience.

Challenges we ran into

Navigating the challenges as a predominantly first-year hacker team presented a steep learning curve. The initial hurdle of grasping coding fundamentals, given our limited prior experience, proved to be the biggest obstacle. The added pressure of working within a time constraint further intensified the learning process, requiring us to swiftly adapt and efficiently manage our workflow. Integrating the front end with the back end posed a notable challenge, but with proper guidance, we bridged the knowledge gap between the two components. Ensuring images displayed correctly and effective time management emerged as additional complexities, demanding meticulous attention to detail and strategic allocation of resources. In facing these obstacles, we forged a strong bond as a team, leaning on one another for support and drawing guidance from mentors. Our collaborative efforts not only helped us overcome these challenges but also fostered a sense of camaraderie and a sense of achievement.

Navigating the intricacies of the Google API for the first time presented its challenges. Unfamiliar with the process, we turned to YouTube tutorials and StackOverflow to gain a better understanding and guidance. Grasping the concept of connecting and pinpointing the correct API for searching a specific location and identifying nearby parks was the most complicated part to overcome.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team accomplished a number of things we are extremely proud of, especially considering it marked the first hackathon experience for the majority of each of us. We successfully built a fun and functional project that we are incredibly proud of, while remaining focused and learning how to create something entirely new despite having no prior experience. We built our code code into a working project, showcasing our adaptability and commitment to skill development and creativity. Despite being strangers at the outset, we gelled as a team and worked cohesively, leveraging our diverse strengths. In a 12-hour timeframe, we not only conceived the project idea but also designed and coded it from scratch, highlighting our rapid ideation and implementation capabilities. An additional achievement was our successful integration of the Google API into the project, enhancing its functionality. This collective experience marks a significant milestone in our growth as individuals and as a collaborative team.

What we learned

We learned to create websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript; and collaborated effectively as a team. Patience and time management became crucial skills, and we discovered leadership dynamics that promoted teamwork and learning. Exploring Figma enhanced our design abilities, and understanding hackathon processes provided valuable insights. Overall, this experience not only improved our technical skills but also sparked a newfound passion for design.

What's next for Pawfect One

The future of Pawfect One has many exciting features aimed at enhancing user engagement that we unfortunately did not have the time to fully implement. Our roadmap includes the implementation of multiple profiles, enabling users to manage information for various pets. We plan to integrate a database for efficient profile storage and retrieval, coupled with the introduction of a secure login page with security implementation. Beyond parks, we plan to expand our platform to include diverse place categories such as dog-friendly cafes and hiking trails. To foster a positive community, a report and blocking user feature is also in the works. Additionally, we aim to provide users with more settings and customization options for refined matches. Looking ahead, we're set to broaden our pet options, welcoming not just dogs but also cats, ferrets, and more. These enhancements reflect our commitment to creating a comprehensive and inclusive platform for pet lovers. Stay tuned as we continue to evolve Pawfect One!
