Inspiration
The idea behind Origin was born out of a deep passion for exploring and experiencing different cultures and heritages from around the world. I have watched many youtube vlogs on traveling and eating diverse food. However, I realized that not everyone has the time, resources, or opportunity to travel extensively, and I wanted to create a platform that would make it possible for people to experience the beauty and richness of diverse cultures from anywhere in the world.
What it does
Users can browse through the app's extensive library of stories, ranging from ancient myths and legends to contemporary narratives, and learn about different cultural traditions and beliefs. They can also discover a wide range of authentic recipes from different regions and cuisines, complete with step-by-step instructions and stunning images. The maps feature allows users to explore different parts of the world, learn about cultural landmarks, and gain a better understanding of different cultures and communities.
How we built it
Origin was built using the Glide App Builder, which is a no-code platform that allows developers to create and design mobile applications using Glide Sheets as a database. The app's interactive map was designed using HTML and CSS, which allows for a highly customizable and responsive design/output. The app's content, including stories, recipes, and maps, was added to the app's database through Glide Sheets, making it easy to manage and update the app's content in real-time. Overall, Glide's no-code platform and the use of HTML and CSS allowed the developers to create a user-friendly and engaging app that provides an immersive and educational experience for users.
Challenges we ran into
As I was building Origin, I encountered a number of challenges that needed to be addressed. One major obstacle was the time difference between myself and the hackathon itself. This made it difficult to keep track of progress.
Additionally, I soon realized that there was an overwhelming amount of cultural information to include in the app. In order to create a comprehensive and engaging experience for users, I focused on including only the most significant cultural traditions and practices. By doing so, I was able to ensure that the app provided a meaningful experience without overwhelming users with too much information.
Another challenge I faced was creating a user-friendly and culturally sensitive design for the app. I spent a lot of time testing different layouts and designs, as well as gathering feedback from users to ensure that the app was easy to navigate and understand, while still providing a deep cultural experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I am proud of the accomplishments I achieved while building Origin. First and foremost, I am proud of the app itself - its design, functionality, and the rich cultural experience it provides to users. It's a great app to use to explore other cultures, and for now, it's limited to only a few. I will strive to add more!
What we learned
I learned the importance of prioritization and focus. With so much cultural information to include in the app, I realized that it was crucial to narrow our focus to the most important traditions and practices. This allowed me to create a more streamlined and engaging user experience, without overwhelming/offending users with the information.
What's next for Origin
Origin will evolve to have user-generated content in the app. This would allow users to share their own stories, recipes, and cultural experiences, further enhancing the sense of community and connection that Origin provides.
I am also looking into expanding the app to include more interactive features, such as virtual tours and language learning tools. These features would provide users with even more opportunities to immerse themselves in the diverse cultures and traditions represented in the app.
