Inspiration
We came into the hackathon wanting to have fun and learn something new, so we decided to dive into the gaming world and try our hands at something none of us had much experience in. We all love the horror genre when it comes to games and movies, so we thought it was only fitting that we take that route in our game's story.
What it does
One Night at Ritchie's is a sit-and-survive style horror game in which the player must stay in their apartment, observe security cameras recording areas around campus, and fend off the eerie mascots roaming RIT. The player has limited additional tools, such as a door and blinds to keep their pursuers from entering their apartment, but using each tool comes at a cost. The player will find themself in a terrifying game of resource management and a true test of their bravery.
How we built it
We built One Night at Ritchie's using the Unity3D game engine. We utilized the C# language to program the game's mechanics, as well as Figma for design. Our mascot's enemy AI was created using C# and is based partially on both randomization and player actions. We also used mobile technology to capture assets from around campus to use as security camera footage. Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into was our lack of experience with the Unity3D game engine. This led to slower development than we were used to, but we remained passionate about our project and determined to learn new skills, resulting in demo that we are proud to present.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that we were able to overcome every issue that came our way and persevere through our setbacks. In the end, we can confidently say that each of us learned valuable new skills from this project and a new appreciation for game design.
What we learned
The most important thing we learned was to not forget to have fun along the way, as we were able to put true passion into this project when we took it as an opportunity to make something enjoyable and learn something new. We also learned that UI design is much more difficult than it looks.
What's next for One Night at Ritchie's
We look forward to fleshing out the ambiance of the game, including sounds and extra spooky effects, and think it would be even scarier in VR!
