Traveling to a destination should not require switching between multiple apps for trains, weather, hotels, local attractions, food, maps, translation, and emergency information. This becomes even harder when traveling to regions where connectivity can be unreliable and local information is fragmented.
OFFPATH was inspired by the idea of creating a single intelligent travel companion that understands the complete journey rather than treating every travel task as a separate service.
What We Built
OFFPATH is an AI-powered travel super app designed to bring the entire travel journey into one place.
Users can discover destinations, search railway routes and stations, compare fares, check train schedules and PNR information, explore hotels, guides, points of interest and local food, view weather information, translate between regional languages, plan trips, and access emergency information.
The platform also includes an AI Copilot that can understand the user's travel context and provide relevant assistance instead of simply acting as a generic chatbot.
How It Works
OFFPATH combines a responsive web interface with a modular backend architecture.
The frontend is built as a lightweight single-page application, while the backend provides APIs for railway discovery, weather, geocoding, accommodation, guides, POIs, translation, trip planning, emergency services, AI conversations and vision-based identification.
The AI layer uses Google's Gemini models for conversational assistance and contextual travel intelligence. Server-Sent Events are used for streaming AI responses so users can interact with the Copilot in real time.
A regional offline data pack is also maintained for essential destination information, allowing important information to remain available when connectivity is limited.
What We Learned
Building OFFPATH taught us that a useful AI travel application is not just about adding a chatbot. The real challenge is connecting AI with reliable data, user context, maps, transportation information and actionable workflows.
We focused heavily on making the system transparent about simulated versus live information, handling offline scenarios, improving Safari compatibility, and designing the application so individual services work together as one continuous journey.
Challenges We Faced
Some of the biggest challenges were integrating multiple travel capabilities into a single application without making the interface overwhelming, maintaining consistent state between different workflows, handling railway and location data, supporting multilingual interaction, and ensuring reliable behaviour across browsers and network conditions.
We also had to address issues such as modal navigation, search history, trip persistence, performance during map interactions, and safe handling of API credentials.
Future Vision
Our goal is to evolve OFFPATH from a travel information platform into a genuinely context-aware travel companion.
Future versions can provide deeper personalized recommendations, real-time journey intelligence, richer offline capabilities, more intelligent multimodal interaction, and proactive assistance throughout the complete journey — from planning the trip to safely reaching the destination.
OFFPATH — Travel beyond the map.
