NIRA — Never Ignore Risk Assistant
Inspiration: As people grow older, living independently can become challenging due to falls, sudden health-related emergencies, disorientation, and delays in receiving help. For elderly people living alone, even a small incident can become serious if nobody notices it in time. We built "NIRA (Never Ignore Risk Assistant)" with one mission: to make elderly care smarter, safer, and more responsive. We believe technology should not only detect problems but also help people get assistance when they need it most.
What It Does: NIRA is an AI-powered elderly safety and assistance system designed to connect elderly individuals with their caregivers through intelligent monitoring and timely alerts. Key capabilities include:
- AI-powered risk detection:Identifies potential safety concerns and unusual events.
- Voice-based assistance: Enables elderly users to interact with the system naturally and request help through speech.
- Emergency alerts: Notifies caregivers when a potential emergency or risk is detected.
- Location awareness: Helps caregivers understand where assistance may be needed.
- Caregiver dashboard: Provides a centralized interface for monitoring safety information, reviewing incidents, and responding to alerts.
- Elderly profile and incident history: Organizes relevant user information and records reported incidents for easier follow-up.
How We Built It: We developed NIRA as a modular system with two complementary components: a live system for real-time interactions and a demonstration interface for presenting the overall experience.
The live component focuses on voice interaction, processing user speech, recognizing requests for assistance, and connecting relevant events to the safety workflow. The demonstration component provides the user interface for elderly profiles, caregiver monitoring, safety information, and incident history.
We designed the system around a simple principle: make assistance accessible to elderly users while giving caregivers a clearer view of potential risks. The architecture is modular so that monitoring, voice processing, location services, alert handling, and the user interface can work together.
Challenges We Faced: One of our biggest challenges was coordinating live functionality with the demonstration interface while maintaining a consistent experience across the system.
We also had to consider the reliability of speech recognition, the interpretation of voice requests, the delivery of meaningful alerts, and the presentation of safety information in a way that is easy to understand.
Balancing functionality, usability, and development time during a hackathon pushed us to prioritize essential features and organize the project into manageable modules.
What We Learned:
Building NIRA helped us understand how AI, speech processing, location awareness, and user-centered interface design can come together to address a real-world problem.
We learned the importance of modular development, integration between independently developed components, clear communication within a team, and designing technology around the needs of its users.
Most importantly, we learned that a safety system must prioritize reliability, privacy, accessibility, and timely human intervention rather than relying on automation alone.
What's Next:
Our vision is to evolve NIRA into a more comprehensive elderly care platform with wearable-device integration, improved risk detection, reliable emergency communication, and personalized assistance.
We also aim to improve accessibility for different languages and speech patterns, reduce false alarms, and strengthen privacy protections.
NIRA is built around one promise: Never Ignore Risk. Every signal matters, every second counts, and every life deserves care.
