Inspiration

There are many natural disasters around the world, especially in third world countries that affect many families, leaving them with little to nothing. We've created a web app to help these people get back on their feet.

What it does

This web app helps locate nearby shelters at a certain radius for those nearby. It shows multiple shelters by range, leaving the user to have the choice to pick which shelter they want to go to. The app also has a hazard feature to show possible hazards and possible weather alerts.

How we built it

We used mainly Javascript for our project. We used a React framework with the libraries leaflet and lucide-react. We used Vite to help build our project as well.

Challenges we ran into

The main challenges we ran into was implementing the weather API and map API for our web app. The navigation feature was also a challenge. One challenge that was definitely a hurdle was that we had to learn many language and frameworks including the implementations of APIs on the go. Lastly, our last problem was learning git and learning how to work together.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud that we were able to get the project working. It took a lot of learning and a lot of teamwork as well. We really enjoyed learning how to work with different languages and learning how to build with a new framework.

What we learned

We primarily learned JavaScript, how to implement APIs, how to build a project with a React Framework via Vite, and finally how to use git.

What's next for NearbyCare

Our version of NearbyCare is a prototype with mock functions. However, in the near future, we could incorporate live updates and real location trackers of shelters, hospitals, and other resources nearby. Also, we can implement more chatbot features.
