Muhaffiz App helps Urban women Commute Safely

Inspiration

The feeling when walking into or going somewhere that seems unfamiliar can cause a person to feel hopeless. Listening to friends and family talk about to be careful and take care of yourself and always keep in touch, so that they know where you are. This made me think a lot, for a Women this all is overwhelming and for her to be safe and keep it touch is the main priority. When a woman travels back to her home from her office in the dark across the empty streets, it’s a matter of great concern for her near & dear ones. During the course of her commute (however short it might be), she’ll keep on receiving these calls/texts asking where has she reached and how long will it take and once she reaches home, a sigh of relief is heaved. It is this sense of relief which comes with enabling one to track their near & dear ones. So the inspiration came from this as I wanted all the people to feel secure that someone knows in their family what is their current location and that they can attend to their business without any hesitation, tension or endangerment.

Muhaffiz Helps Urban women Commute Safely

Muhaffiz is specifically designed and optimized for Urban Women who commute and roam freely who are experiencing the need of constantly informing loved ones where they are, makes the commute safer, and removes the need to take your phone out every time just to send a simple SMS to let loved ones know where you are. Our Muhaffiz App helps Urban women Commute Safely Without typing send an SMS to let loved ones know where you are Instead of constantly sending out texts informing loved ones and not delaying those texts this app helps automate that and your path can then be easily traced to know your journey. Reducing time it takes to send texts and making the person insured that her family knows where is she at the moment and when will she be back home this helps you gain the feel of being safe while commuting, assurance that loved ones will know where you are, and the locations sent can be mapped to see the complete destination path.

Stats that influenced the idea

93% women experience some form of sexual violence in public places. These women want to feel safe knowing their loved ones are aware that she is in the right place. Most of these women do want an app that feels this vacuum where an app shares location parodically to only a select few numbers only. With a research I conducted on the topic, asking some women and presenting them with this idea most females said they would be willing to use the app and feel safer in public places rather than doing nothing.

What it does

The app is designed to share location via SMS to those numbers selected by the person and then periodically sends current location of the phone to the people via SMS. So as to make the person feel more secure and helpful. This is opensource project and it target a much wider audience.

How I built it

The complete application has been built using Flutter. On the backend side the SMS handler is supported by a Flutter plugin called telephony, the location for the app is fetched via the plugin called geolocator and the coordinates and reverse geocoding using geocoding package. I tried to make the app as simple as possible so that the user has no issues while using it. The SMS is sent periodically using the CRON package and the time can be sent using the app itself. The Frontend for the app was initially designed in the adobe XD and then the UI designs was followed to match the end product.

Ideal Customer

Our App is focused on helping Urban Women to commute and roam around the city safely. This App can also serve the purpose of locating a device incase its lost or has gotten stolen. Children with phones can also be tracked periodically to keep an eye on them and also with the our move to implement the app into cars will help you to track your vehicles as well.

Larger Audience

The app is not limited into letting your family know your whereabouts but incase of theft the phone can also be traced using the app. In Future we will bring it into Car systems so the app will be able to show you your vehicle location periodically as well.

Challenges I ran into

There were many challenges that I ran into. I had problems fetching the location and then sending the SMS, solving these issues took me 2 days. The app's Frontend design was difficult to make as I had no design that were clicking. So, I decided to go with the simple UI.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud that I was able to make a commendable MVP in a limited time and environment. The app functions completely and the App has the ability to save lives and help people walk to their destination without fear. This App has the capacity to serve a much wider audience and I am proud of the fact that this app is going to change the world!

What we learned

I learned to work with linting files, null safety and use of new packages and writing for what really matter to make the world a better place.

What's next for Muhaffiz App

I have much planned for this app.

  • I will switch to using Twilio API to make it support sending SMS even when person doesn't have any balance.
  • Working on improving the UI and UX.
  • Encouraging people to contribute to the project and continuing to keep it opensource.
  • As the app is built using Flutter it will be easy as breeze to expand to different platforms. The App will be available for IOS and embeded car devices
