Inspiration

Every day, millions of community cats go unnoticed. Information about their location, health, feeding schedules, or rescue needs is scattered across social media, making it difficult for animal lovers, rescuers, and shelters to work together.

We created Meowderer to bridge that gap—a platform where every cat has a story and every community member can make a difference. Inspired by the power of crowdsourcing and location-based technology, our goal was to transform simple cat sightings into meaningful actions that improve the lives of stray and community cats.

Our mission is simple: Make every community cat visible, remembered, and cared for.

What it Does

Meowderer is a community-driven platform that allows users to:

  • 🗺️ Discover community cats through an interactive map.
  • 📸 Report cat sightings with photos and GPS location.
  • 🐈 Create detailed profiles for each cat, including appearance, personality, health status, and history.
  • 📚 Build a collaborative CatDex to document cats encountered by the community.
  • 💬 Share updates, help identify cats, and collaborate with other users.
  • ❤️ Support rescuers, shelters, and volunteers by centralizing important information.

By bringing all this information together in one place, Meowderer makes community cat care more organized, collaborative, and impactful.

How We Built It

We built Meowderer using a modern web technology stack:

  • Next.js for the application framework
  • React for building dynamic user interfaces
  • TypeScript for scalable and type-safe development
  • Supabase for authentication, database, and backend services
  • Tailwind CSS for responsive and modern UI design
  • Progressive Web App (PWA) technologies for an app-like experience across devices
  • GitHub for version control and team collaboration

Our architecture was designed to be modular, scalable, and easy to extend with future features.

Challenges We Ran Into

One of our biggest challenges was balancing feature richness with simplicity. We wanted users to contribute valuable information without making the experience overwhelming.

Another challenge was designing a flexible database capable of handling community-generated content, location data, and detailed cat profiles while remaining scalable.

With limited hackathon time, we focused on building a polished MVP that demonstrates the platform's long-term potential.

Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

  • Built a fully functional end-to-end platform during the hackathon.
  • Created an engaging experience for discovering and documenting community cats.
  • Designed a platform that encourages collaboration between volunteers, rescuers, and animal lovers.
  • Developed a scalable foundation for future expansion.

What We Learned

Throughout this project, we strengthened our skills in:

  • Rapid product development
  • Full-stack web development
  • Database design
  • Team collaboration
  • User-centered design
  • Building location-aware applications

More importantly, we learned that technology can empower communities to create meaningful real-world impact.

What's Next for Meowderer

This is only the beginning. Future plans include:

  • AI-powered cat recognition
  • Lost-and-found pet matching
  • Veterinary and shelter partnerships
  • Rescue request management
  • Gamification and community rewards
  • Analytics for animal welfare organizations
  • Expansion into a global platform supporting community cats everywhere

We believe Meowderer has the potential to become the go-to platform for connecting people who care with cats that need them.
