Mentorious ~ Education for everyone - A Journey to Merit

Through our mentorship platform, we aim to inculcate awareness among learners of all ages and provide access to information about marine life using interactive visual-models of maps.

Inspiration

We observed that many students were inclined towards marine life, but did not have access to proper guidance, resources and data to increase their awareness about it. In order to bridge the gap between the students and resources, we incorporated interactive, visual-models of maps in our application. Plastic pollution and oil spills are a problem to life, in all its forms, therefore, we strongly believe, it is our social and corporate responsibility to address this problem. In addition to this, we have added mentorship platforms for eight different subjects, where mentors can provide content/resources for students to expand their knowledge.

What it does

We have a two faced approach to the problem we are addressing. The first tool we have built consists of visual maps. The second tool is a mentorship platform for students to learn new topics covering different aspects of education.

How we built it

In order to build the application, we used Figma for the UI design, Adobe Illustrator for the graphics, MongoDB for the database, PassportJS for the authentication, NodeJS for backend and EJS for the layout/frontend. For building the maps, we used MapBox.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenge we faced what to research and get appropriate data regarding marine life for the maps. After finding the data, we had to clean it and convert it from CSV to GeoJSON format to incorporate it on the map.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud to build a tool that address a problem posed to life, in various forms while simultaneously providing students access to data and resources that was not earlier available.

What we learned

We expanded our understanding of NodeJS and our design skills. We gained experience in building real-world applications and boosted our problem solving skills.

What's next for Mentorious ~ Education for everyone - A Journey to Merit

In the future, we plan to add video calling and chat features in our application. Adding more subjects to the mentorship platform, collaborating with experienced teachers to share their knowledge on our platform. Apart from this, we pan to create larger databases about marine life, thereby adding more maps to our website.
