Inspiration
Melody is a product that all of our members hold near and dear in our hearts. Our inspiration stems from all of the young artists in our lives that we personally know and support. We wanted to create a platform to help them promote their music because current platforms tend to be oversaturated, which makes it difficult for new local artists to truly share their music with an audience.
What it does
To solve this issue, we built an app that allows users to discover new up and coming artists on Spotify based on their preferred genre. It utilizes Spotify API software to grab user preferences and then gives an automated local artist based on the amalgamation of recently played songs.
How we built it
We built the app using the Spotify API to provide a sign-in option for users. We used Java and XML to code our program on Android Studio to create the app, Figma to design our interface, and Adobe Illustrator to design our logo.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges we ran into was the feasibility of our product. Our first idea, a matchmaking service based on music taste would’ve taken far too long. Manually putting user data online would’ve taken more time than we had under the given time constraint, as a result, we had to improvise and made adjustments to our project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of participating in our very first hackathon! Some of our members have extensive experience with code, while others did not. Creating a space for teamwork and learning is one of our biggest accomplishments! We also are very proud of collectively creating the first draft of our fully functioning app!
What we learned
As a team, we have learned so much more about coding practices. We have only begun to learn about the basics of Android Studio which most of our team have never worked with before. We learned how to use Figma, a Vector Graphics Editor to design our app interface and logo. We all also gained insight into how to implement API into code and app design.
What's next for Melody.
In the future, Melody. will include more features to help narrow down the potential new artists that our users are matched with. These features include regions and artists similar to the genre, accessed via the API’s popularity ranking feature. Melody will also offer a matchmaker service that connects our users with other Spotify users based on their similarity in music taste. After the user accepts their match, they will have the option to curate a playlist for their new music penpal via the Melody app and connect with them through other social platforms such as Instagram.
