Inspiration
The idea for MedSOS came from a personal experience during a power outage. In the darkness, I repeatedly bumped into objects and struggled to move safely. That moment made me think about people who face similar challenges every day, especially visually impaired individuals, elderly people, and patients who depend on medication schedules.
I realized that a missed medicine dose, a fall, or the inability to quickly call for help can have serious consequences. We wanted to create a solution that combines accessibility, safety, and health management in one simple platform.
What it does
MedSOS is an AI-powered safety and medication companion designed to help vulnerable users live more independently.
The platform provides:
- Smart medication reminders
- Emergency SOS alerts with location sharing
- Caregiver and family support
- Medication adherence tracking
- Refill reminders and medication history
- Accessibility-focused design
- Voice-assisted interaction
- AI-assisted safety features for future expansion
Our goal is to reduce missed medications, improve emergency response, and increase independence for visually impaired and elderly users.
How we built it
We built MedSOS using modern cross-platform mobile technologies to ensure accessibility and scalability.
The application includes:
- Mobile-first user interface
- Local notification system
- Emergency contact management
- GPS location sharing
- Medication scheduling and tracking
- Health adherence analytics
- Accessibility-focused user experience
The system was designed to remain lightweight, reliable, and easy to use for users with varying levels of technical experience.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was balancing simplicity with functionality.
Users who need medication support are often elderly or visually impaired, which means complicated interfaces can become barriers instead of solutions.
Another challenge was designing reliable reminder and emergency systems while maintaining a smooth user experience.
We also focused on ensuring that future AI features could be integrated without increasing complexity for users.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Built a complete medication management workflow
- Created emergency alert functionality with location sharing
- Designed an accessibility-focused interface
- Added caregiver-oriented features
- Developed a solution inspired by a real-world problem
Most importantly, we transformed a personal experience into a project that has the potential to improve daily life for many people.
What we learned
Through this project we learned that successful healthcare technology is not only about advanced features.
Reliability, accessibility, usability, and trust are equally important.
We also learned how human-centered design can help create technology that addresses real problems faced by vulnerable communities.
What's next for MedSOS
Future development will focus on:
- AI-powered obstacle detection
- Medicine verification using computer vision
- Voice-first navigation for visually impaired users
- Fall detection and automatic emergency alerts
- Expanded caregiver monitoring tools
- Advanced accessibility features
Our vision is to transform MedSOS from a medication reminder into a complete AI-powered safety companion that helps people stay safe, healthy, and independent.
