Inspiration
Every second counts in a medical emergency — yet patients, ambulance drivers, and hospitals still operate in silos. MediRoute was built to bridge that gap: a single platform that connects all three stakeholders and eliminates coordination delays that cost lives.
What it does
MediRoute is an end-to-end emergency response ecosystem with three dedicated portals:
Patient portal — One-click ambulance request, live tracking, ETA, and family notifications.
Driver portal — Instant dispatch alerts, optimized routing, and patient info preview.
Hospital dashboard — Bed & ICU tracking, incoming patient alerts, pre-arrival preparation and most importantly patient history like allergies , blood group and any past medical history.
Smart dispatch engine — Auto-selects the nearest available ambulance, calculates the fastest route using real-time traffic, and recommends the best hospital by availability and proximity.
How we built it
React.js · TypeScript · Tailwind CSS · Node.js + Express · PostgreSQL · Socket.IO · Google Maps API · JWT + RBAC · Vercel + AWS
Challenges we ran into
- Low-latency GPS sync across three user types without drift or lag
- Ambulance allocation that accounts for traffic and travel time — not just raw distance
- Real-time data sync: hospital beds, driver availability, and patient state — all consistent
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Fully functional multi-role system with separate dashboards for patients, drivers, and hospitals
- Working real-time ambulance tracking with live status updates
- Scalable architecture designed for city-wide deployment
What we learned
Real-time systems are deceptively hard to scale. Designing for three concurrent user roles forced us to think deeply about WebSocket architecture, role-based access, and state consistency — skills we'll carry into every future project. More importantly, we learned that good engineering can directly reduce human suffering.
What's next for MediRoute
- AI-powered hospital recommendation (beds, ICU, specialization, traffic)
- Emergency severity triage and auto-prioritization
- Accident auto-detection via computer vision
- EHR integration for pre-arrival patient data
- Smart traffic signal priority routing
- Android & iOS mobile apps
