Inspiration

The inspiration for MediConnect came from witnessing the critical need for efficient hospital resource management during medical emergencies. We saw how patients and their families often struggle to find hospitals with available beds, oxygen, or ambulances during crises. The COVID-19 pandemic particularly highlighted the importance of real-time resource tracking to save lives and reduce unnecessary strain on healthcare systems.

What it does

MediConnect is a comprehensive platform that:

Provides real-time visualization of hospital resources across India. Tracks availability of beds, oxygen cylinders, and ambulances. Displays hospitals on an interactive map with color-coded markers indicating resource status. Allows users to filter hospitals by specific resource needs. Shows detailed information including contact numbers and last update times. Enables location-based searching to find nearest available facilities.

How we built it

We built MediConnect using:

Frontend: React with TypeScript for type safety and maintainability Mapping: Leaflet.js for the interactive map visualization Styling: Tailwind CSS for responsive, utility-first styling Backend: Supabase for database operations and real-time updates Geolocation: Browser geolocation API for user positioning

Deployment: Netlify for continuous deployment and hosting

Features

The application features:

Dynamic marker generation based on hospital data. Intelligent filtering system for resource types. Responsive design that works on all device sizes. Clean, intuitive user interface.

Challenges we ran into

During development, we faced several challenges: Map Integration: Getting Leaflet to work smoothly with React required careful state management. Data Accuracy: Ensuring hospital data remains current and reliable. Performance: Optimizing map rendering with numerous markers. Geolocation: Handling various browser permission scenarios. Responsive Design: Creating a consistent experience across devices.

Type Safety: Maintaining strict TypeScript typing throughout the codebase

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating a fully functional prototype in a short timeframe. Designing an intuitive user interface that makes critical information easily accessible. Implementing real-time filtering without performance issues. Developing a color-coded system that immediately communicates resource availability. Building a solution that could genuinely help people in emergency situations.

What we learned

Through this project, we gained: Deeper understanding of React hooks and state management. Experience with mapping libraries and geolocation APIs. Knowledge about handling real-time data in web applications. Insights into the healthcare resource management challenges. Improved skills in responsive design and accessibility.

Better appreciation for user experience in crisis situations

What's next for MediConnect

Real Hospital Integrations: Partnering with hospitals for live data feeds. User Accounts: Allowing hospitals to update their own information. Emergency Request System: Enabling direct resource requests. Notification System: Push alerts for resource availability changes. Expanded Resources: Adding ICU beds, ventilators, and specialist doctors. Regional Expansion: Covering more areas beyond initial deployment. Analytics Dashboard: Providing insights into resource trends. Mobile App: Native application development for broader accessibility. We believe MediConnect has the potential to revolutionize how people access emergency healthcare resources, and we're committed to its continued development.
