Inspiration
Many of us in the team have been in situations where we had to get a walk-in Covid test. This being daunting enough, it didn't really help that we had to wait about 2 hours at the testing centre, as there were really long lines and we just seemed to have arrrived at the wrong time. This further increased our anxiety about exposure to the virus as even though social distancing measures were in place, we still had to be there for a significantly long time. To help solve this, we wanted to create a central booking system that takes regular updates from testing site health workers, where users wanting to get a test can be updated of the crowd level of Covid testing sites near them.
What it does
Our web-app consists of 2 interfaces: one for the testing site health workers which collects data inputted by them about their available timeslots and the number of people they can take in. The other is user-side, which allows users to book a timeslot of their preffred testing centre, according to the availabilities provided by the testing centre.
How we built it
We designed Mockups using Adobe Illustrator and built the funcionalities into a front-end React web app and . We used MapTiler mapping platform along with react-leaflet to implement our map functionalities, and EmailJS to send automated emails of our booking details. We deployed using heroku.
Challenges we ran into
- Our team consists of 3 people in 2 considerably different time zones, so it was hard to find a suitable meeting for everyone.
- We originally wanted to use react-google-maps to implement Google Maps API, but found out that it no longer offers a free tier. We ended up opting for react-leaflet coupled with MapTiler, another open source maps service.
- We were complete beginners in React - always a pleasant challenge to learn a new tech stack :)
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Designing a clean and intuitive user flow
- Integrating with Map and EmailJS APIs and services
What we learned
- Learning to create Mockups with Adobe Illustrator
- Familiarise ourselves with Git version control and APIs
- Using the React framework
What's next for Me Is Covid Free
As soon as possible: We are going to integrate this website application into the Victorian testing sites.
- Include creating mobile responsiveness.
- Create a mobile application that can be downloaded
Within 6 months: We are scaling up to create a one-stop booking system that consists of aspects related to medical health. This includes:
- Find me a doctor
- A system where doctors can input their specialty, location and time availability and patients in need of a doctor can find a doctor that are available.
- Patients and doctors can make an online appointment which eliminates easily flawed manual booking systems.
- I need a hospital
- Similar to Find me a doctor, patients with this system can find a hospital with available hospital beds.
- Creating online and automatic booking
- Vaccine booking system.
- To have a one stop shop system for all aspects of medical health, we are looking forward to work with the Australian government to integrate their vaccine booking system in our web application
By 2022+: We hope that our Me is Covid Free can be used as a world platform internationally.
