Inspiration
We wanted to create a simple yet powerful tool for people who love exploring outdoors—whether hiking, cycling, or just walking around. The goal was to help users easily track their routes, mark important spots, and keep a record of their journeys without complicated setups or expensive gear.
What it does
MapTrackr lets users track their location on an interactive map in real time, drop custom pins, and automatically record the route they take. It shows live stats like distance and elevation, saves trips for later review, and allows easy sharing or exporting of routes. The app works smoothly across all devices, making it accessible anytime, anywhere.
How we built it
The app is built using Bolt.New with modern web technologies, focusing on responsive design and user-friendly interactions. We used mapping APIs (Nominatim OpenStreetMap API) to provide detailed maps and location tracking. State management was optimized to handle live updates efficiently. The interface is designed with clean layouts, intuitive controls, and clear typography to ensure ease of use.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was maintaining accurate and smooth live tracking without draining device resources or causing lag, especially on mobile devices. Handling offline scenarios and storing data locally without losing information also required careful planning. Ensuring the interface remained clean while providing all necessary features took several design iterations.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We successfully created a lightweight web app that performs well on various devices while offering tracking and detailed stats. The ability to save and revisit past routes with custom labels adds strong value for users. The clean, responsive design received positive feedback for ease of use and visual clarity.
What we learned
We gained valuable experience in balancing performance with feature richness in location-based web apps. We learned how to optimize real-time updates and manage offline data storage effectively. The importance of user-centered design became clear when refining the interface to avoid clutter while keeping functions accessible.
What's next for MapTrackr - A Map Route Tracker Application
Future plans include adding social features so users can follow each other’s routes, integrating more detailed environmental data like weather conditions, and enabling advanced route editing tools. We also want to introduce multi-device sync so trips can be accessed from any device securely.
