Inspiration

We were inspired to build this project by the growing impact of fast fashion and the difficulty many people face when trying to make ethical clothing choices. We wanted to create an easy-to-use tool that helps users find fashionable yet ethical clothing options based on their location and the specific item they are looking for.

What it does

MapleLine is a map-based platform that helps users find ethical and local clothing options near them. Users enter their location and the type of clothing they are looking for, and the platform displays nearby shops as interactive pins on a map of Canada. By clicking on a pin, users can view the shop’s contact information, allowing both the user and seller to connect and exchange goods

How we built it

We built the project by connecting user searches to ethical retailers, visualizing nearby options on a map, and adding a goals page to raise awareness about sustainability and responsible consumption.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges we faced was defining and verifying what counts as “ethical,” as well as ensuring the AI responses were accurate and helpful while keeping the interface simple and accessible.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The accomplishments we are proud of include incorporating Gemini and LeafLet.js API into the project since they required a lot of troubleshooting in order to work the way we desired them to work.

What we learned

Through this project, we learned how to integrate AI tools like Gemini to provide meaningful recommendations, combine location-based mapping with user input, and design features that educate users rather than overwhelm them.

What's next for MapleLine

We are looking forward to expanding our website by making it accessible to international users so more people can discover ethical fashion options. We also further hope to feature more businesses in our website, while keeping it trustworthy, to expand our marketplace. Finally, we aim to add a sign up service to allow users to leave ratings and reviews directly on the website.
