Shipathon Update — ManagerGym is now live
ManagerGym has continued to grow beyond the original Shipathon prototype.
The app is now live on both iOS and Android, and the product has evolved substantially from the first branching-conversation concept.
What started as a simple idea — giving new and aspiring managers a safe place to practice difficult workplace conversations — has become a much more complete leadership-training experience.
What has shipped
Since the original Shipathon build, ManagerGym has added:
- A growing library of leadership conversation scenarios
- Training Paths for structured skill development
- Progress tracking across key leadership dimensions
- ManagerGym Coach, which reviews an actual completed practice session and explains:
- strengths
- growth areas
- pivotal decisions
- stronger alternatives
- recovery opportunities
- what to practice next
- Voice Mode, allowing Coach feedback to be heard using on-device text-to-speech
- Practice Next, which recommends another relevant leadership workout
- iOS Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets for:
- Today's Leadership Rep
- Leadership Momentum
- Remote scenario delivery while keeping bundled content available offline
- ManagerGym Pro subscriptions powered by RevenueCat
- Marketplace Reviewer Access that remains separate from normal subscriptions
The core product principle has stayed the same:
ManagerGym decides. Optional AI explains.
The important parts of the training experience — scoring, outcomes, strengths, growth areas, pivotal decisions, recommendations, and access rules — remain deterministic and explainable.
A problem I understood personally
As ManagerGym developed, the reason I wanted to keep building it became even clearer.
When I first became a manager, I didn't have somewhere I could safely practice the difficult conversations that suddenly became part of the job.
Giving tough feedback, dealing with missed commitments, managing poor performance, resolving conflict, setting expectations, and having uncomfortable conversations were things I largely learned by doing.
I reflected on what worked, adapted when something didn't, and gradually became better as I took on more leadership responsibility.
Looking back, I wish I had something like ManagerGym.
A place where I could make the difficult decision before the real employee was sitting across from me.
That continues to be the product goal:
Practice before it matters.
Building a real product also means maintaining it
One thing Shipathon reinforced for me is that shipping the first version is only the beginning.
ManagerGym 1.2.0 introduced the expanded Coach experience, Voice Mode, Practice Next, and iOS widgets.
During post-release maintenance, I discovered that the production build had been packaged without the RevenueCat production configuration. The app correctly failed safe into Free mode rather than crashing, but ManagerGym Pro purchases and restores were unavailable.
For the upcoming 1.2.1 maintenance release, I have now:
- restored the production RevenueCat build configuration
- added guarded Android and iOS release scripts
- moved production SDK configuration into a local environment file that is never committed
- added checks that prevent release builds from accidentally using RevenueCat Test Store configuration
- added automated regression tests for the release configuration
- verified a real production-key Android release build
- fixed the Android launcher name so it displays correctly as Manager Gym
- expanded the automated test suite to 434 passing tests
The maintenance release is currently going through final signed-build and physical-device subscription QA before release.
That experience was a useful reminder that product development is not just about adding features.
Release engineering, subscriptions, QA, safeguards, and maintenance are part of the product too.
What's next
There are several directions I want to explore next.
Multilingual ManagerGym
One of the next major product improvements will be multilingual support.
The goal is not simply to translate buttons and navigation. Leadership practice needs the actual scenarios, conversations, coaching, accessibility text, notifications, and Voice Mode experience to work naturally in the selected language.
The first multilingual release is being planned around:
- English
- Filipino
- Spanish
English will remain the authoritative fallback whenever localized content is unavailable.
On-device AI experimentation
ManagerGym was intentionally designed so that generative AI is optional rather than required.
I have already experimented with Apple's on-device Foundation Models framework. The integration worked on a physical device, but the measured generation latency and output reliability were not yet suitable for synchronous Coach Review.
Rather than force AI into the product, ManagerGym kept the deterministic Coach experience in production.
The next experiment will explore Gemini Nano / on-device Android AI on supported devices.
The same rule will apply:
AI may improve the explanation, but it will never become the authority for the leadership assessment.
The bigger vision
ManagerGym began as a Shipathon project.
It is now becoming the tool I wish I had when I first became a manager.
The long-term goal is simple.
Before an important conversation, I want a manager to be able to open ManagerGym, practice the situation, hear the feedback, try another approach, and walk into the real conversation thinking:
“I've practiced this. I know how I want to handle it.”
That is still what ManagerGym is about.
Train. Improve. Lead.
An unexpected post-launch lesson
One unexpected part of shipping ManagerGym was discovering another app on Google Play using the same ManagerGym name and operating in a very similar leadership-conversation training space.
That was a reminder that once a product is public, building the software is only part of the job. Brand protection, marketplace monitoring, documentation of prior publication, and clear product differentiation also matter.
I have already submitted the appropriate marketplace reports and am keeping the focus on continuing to improve the original ManagerGym experience.
