Tourism is a rapidly growing sector with great potential to boost local economies. However, the rise in visitor numbers has also led to a significant increase in carbon emissions. These emissions stem from various sources, including transportation, accommodations, and tourism activities themselves. Indonesia, one of the world's top tourist destinations, is among the largest contributors to global carbon emissions. In recent years, eco-tourism has gained popularity, yet often it’s managed without considering ecological sustainability, creating a serious threat to vulnerable natural environments, especially in the face of climate change.

To address this challenge, Locavity (Low Carbon Activity) was developed—a low-emission tourism guide app inspired by the Footprint website’s concept of promoting low-carbon lifestyles and activities. Locavity provides an interactive guide for tourism operators and visitors, helping them reduce their carbon footprint at each step of their journey. Using data-driven methods similar to Footprint, Locavity offers information on low-emission transportation options, sustainable accommodation recommendations, and eco-friendly tourism activities.

Through Locavity, tourists and operators can measure and minimize their emissions, setting a new standard in environmentally responsible tourism. This app not only aims to reduce environmental impact but also increases tourist awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism, becoming a key part of climate change mitigation efforts for a greener future.

What it does

Locavity is a pioneering low-carbon tourism app designed to guide tourism operators and visitors in planning and engaging in eco-friendly, low-emission tourism activities. As the first app in sustainable tourism specifically focused on carbon reduction, Locavity provides essential resources and tools to promote environmentally responsible travel. The app helps reduce carbon emissions at every stage of travel, from transportation and accommodation choices to on-site activities, empowering users to make sustainable decisions that contribute to climate change mitigation.

Key features include:

  • L-Calculate A carbon footprint calculator that assesses and tracks emissions from different travel choices, offering users real-time insights into their environmental impact.
  • Top Rank Highlights destinations and users with the lowest carbon footprints, encouraging eco-conscious choices.
  • Emissions Transcript Records users’ travel footprints, allowing for reflection and progress tracking over time.
  • Conservation Donations Provides a channel for users to donate to conservation efforts directly within the app, supporting sustainability initiatives at visited locations.
  • Educational Content Offers information on the environmental impacts of tourism and tips for reducing personal carbon footprints.

Locavity is an invaluable tool for promoting sustainable tourism practices and raising awareness of eco-friendly travel among tourists and tourism operators alike. How we built it

Building an application focused on low-carbon tourism activities involves a few important steps to ensure it effectively supports eco-friendly travel and engages users in sustainable practices. Here are :

  1. Define goals and audience. Our goals in design this application is to increase awareness about emissions carbon issues in daily activities, specifically in tourism aspect. The audience is tourists (people who like traveling and care about the environment) and the tourism manager.
  2. Designing carbon calculations based on the activities carried out.
  3. Make transcripts and rankings from the carbon calculation results obtained
  4. Establish partners with various social accounts to provide access for fellow users
  5. Updating users with the latest news as a guide and motivation to continue carrying out activities with low carbon emissions
  6. Carry out analysis and studies with experts to ensure the quality and accuracy of application use

Challenges we ran into

The challenge we ran into is to influence people, especially the tourist and the tourism manager, to participate in implementing the principles of low carbon emissions in every their activity. So, this application can be the main tool to guide.

  1. Become the first application that can help people to apply the principles of low carbon emissions when traveling
  2. Has a fast, attractive and easy carbon footprint calculation feature
  3. Make obtaining the lowest carbon footprint an attractive things to do

What we learned

We learned a lot with the creation of this Locavity app idea. Climate change has become a global problem caused by many factors, one of which is the tourism sector. Based on this, we learned about climate change mitigation management, low carbon tourism development management, carbon emission calculations, and what steps must be taken to support the reduction of carbon emissions in the tourism sector.

In addition to this, with the idea of the application that has been made, we learned that how the application can be easily used and become very useful for the community and the surrounding environment, so it requires us to look for reading materials with related issues, namely low carbon emissions and tourism.

What's next for Low Carbon Activity (Locavity)

This application has very good prospects for use in the current digital era, where technology is growing rapidly. The use of travel applications in which there is education related to climate change mitigation is a good thing because of the development of a more modern tourism sector and increasing climate problems as well. This application can be used by all tourist destinations as an alternative or contribution to climate change mitigation. The locavity application can also continue with feature improvements (updates) according to the conditions of the times.
