Inspiration
LOCALZ was inspired by a simple problem: people make important real-world decisions based on online information, but it is often difficult to know whether that information is genuine.
When moving to a new city, choosing accommodation, visiting a restaurant, or exploring an unfamiliar area, people rely heavily on ratings and reviews. However, fake, paid, or manipulated reviews can influence these decisions. We wanted to explore a better approach where local information could be supported by physical presence, evidence, community verification, and contributor reputation.
That idea became LOCALZ — Trust What You Discover.
What it does
LOCALZ is a community-powered platform designed to make information about real-world places more trustworthy.
Users can explore places, view reviews, and access local information. More importantly, users can request verification of a location they cannot personally visit. Nearby LOCALZ contributors can accept these requests, physically visit the location, submit evidence, and help users make better decisions.
Contributors build reputation through trustworthy participation and can earn rewards based on their contribution quality and completed verification tasks.
How we built it
We developed LOCALZ as a modern web platform using React, TypeScript, and Tailwind CSS for the frontend, with Supabase providing authentication, PostgreSQL database services, cloud storage, and backend functionality.
The platform includes user authentication, reviews, contributor profiles, reward systems, verification requests, media uploads, and location-based workflows. We designed the concept around combining technology with community participation to create stronger trust signals around local information.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was designing a system that improves trust without assuming that any single technology can completely prove whether information is true.
We also had to think carefully about privacy, location permissions, fake evidence, contributor fraud, and how a reward system could potentially encourage low-quality submissions. Designing a balance between verification, privacy, community participation, and incentives was one of the most challenging parts of the project.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud that LOCALZ evolved beyond being just another review platform.
Our strongest achievement was developing the idea of a community-powered verification network, where someone can request real-world information about a place and nearby contributors can help verify it.
We are also proud of combining multiple ideas — local discovery, contributor reputation, evidence-based information, rewards, and verification requests — into one connected ecosystem.
What we learned
Through building LOCALZ, we learned that solving a problem is not only about building technology. It is equally important to understand user behavior, trust, incentives, privacy, and real-world implementation challenges.
We also learned how a strong product idea requires balancing innovation with practicality. A system can be technically possible but still fail if users do not trust it, understand it, or have a reason to participate.
What's next for LOCALZ — Trust What You Discover
Our next goal is to develop LOCALZ into a larger local verification ecosystem.
Future improvements include stronger verification methods, AI-assisted fraud detection, contributor trust scores, smarter reward mechanisms, and expansion into accommodation, relocation, tourism, and local services.
Our long-term vision is simple:
Google Maps helps people find places. LOCALZ aims to help people trust what they discover about them.
We envision LOCALZ becoming a community-powered trust layer for the physical world — connecting people who need reliable local information with people who can verify it.
