Inspiration
The average American home has over 300,000 items, with 35% of them sitting completely unused. Every second, several tons of old items are thrown out or incinerated, with other people buying that same item. With so many purchases that become just single-use items, this creates too much waste. That's why we created Lendly. Not only does Lendly allow people to grow their income off of their existing belongings, people can get a cheaper and more sustainable alternative to buying items.
What it does
Lendly is a marketplace for lending and renting everyday household items. Have a spare TV laying around? List it on Lendly! Need a TV just for one night? Rent it on Lendly! This way, there's no commitments to big purchases and there's no wastefulness needed.
How we built it
We built a full-stack web application using a Next.js framework, with React frontend, Supabase DB, and Google Authentication. This allowed for realtime messaging and status updates.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into a lot of Supabase async loading issues, where the page would randomly logout or not load resources if the site was left idle for just 10-20 seconds. Finding out that bug took hours, but was satisfying to fix.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
It was really awesome seeing how fast we could build a full-stack application. We remember our first hackathon a few years ago, and we couldn't even submit a project because we didn't know how to code in React. But now, it's awesome how far we've come.
What's next for Lendly
We plan to host out site on Vercel, and complete the payments feature using Stripe. We also plan to add a Map API component so users can see how far away item listings are.
