Inspiration

Millions of families have parents or grandparents living alone, often in another city. The worry never really stops: Did they get up today? Did they step out? Is something wrong? Ring cameras already capture the small signals of a normal day, but nobody has time to watch hours of footage or scroll through notifications. I wanted to turn those raw events into something families can actually use: peace of mind. That's how Kushal ("well-being" in Hindi) was born.

What it does

Kushal is an AI check-in agent for the Ring ecosystem. It learns what a normal day looks like for an elder, then:

  • Sends the family a daily wellbeing digest in plain language
  • Raises anomaly flags when something looks off, like a missed routine or unusual inactivity
  • Gives family members a simple dashboard to see how things have been over time

It's built to be respectful, not invasive: families get a summary and alerts, not a surveillance feed.

Kushal dashboard

How I built it

  • Backend: FastAPI service that ingests Ring events, builds a daily activity baseline and detects deviations
  • AI layer: an agent that turns event patterns into a readable digest and decides when an anomaly is worth flagging
  • Frontend: Next.js dashboard for digests, flags and history
  • Tooling: built with Claude Code to go from idea to working product fast
  • Open source: github.com/SkjOO5/Kushal_Ring, free for anyone to run or extend

Challenges I ran into

  • Defining "normal" for each person, since every elder's routine is different
  • Avoiding false alarms, because too many alerts make families ignore them
  • Turning noisy event data into a digest that is short, warm and useful
  • [Add one real challenge you hit]

What I learned

  • Good caretaking tech is mostly about trust and tone, not just detection
  • The key design question is "when should a human actually be notified?"
  • [Add one technical lesson from your build]

What's next

  • Smarter per-person baselines and weekly trend detection
  • Sharing and notification preferences for multiple family members
  • More devices and more languages, including Hindi
  • A public, fully functional hosted version for anyone to use

Updates

posted an update —

Kushal Ring is live: an AI check-in for elders, built on Ring Kushal Ring is now up and running, and I wanted to share where it stands.

What it does

Kushal watches Ring events and learns what a normal day looks like for an elder. Families get:

  • A daily wellbeing digest in plain language
  • Anomaly flags when something looks unusual, like a missed routine or long inactivity
  • A simple dashboard to see how things have been over time

What's working now

  • FastAPI backend that ingests events and builds a daily baseline
  • Next.js dashboard for digests, flags and history
  • Open source: github.com/SkjOO5/Kushal_Ring

What I'm working on next

  • Smarter per-person baselines and weekly trends
  • Fewer false alarms with better alert logic
  • A public hosted version anyone can use

Feedback and ideas are very welcome. If you have parents or grandparents living alone, what would you want a tool like this to tell you?
