Inspiration

Indian farmers often face a fragmented agricultural supply chain where access to buyers, reliable market prices, farming inputs, storage, and actionable information is spread across different platforms. This can make it difficult for farmers to determine when to sell, where to sell, and how to maximize the value of their produce.

We built KisanDirect to address this problem by creating a direct digital bridge between farmers, buyers, wholesalers, and agricultural retailers. Our goal was not simply to create another marketplace, but to build an agricultural ecosystem where farmers can sell directly, access real-time Mandi intelligence, make data-informed decisions, and manage important parts of their farming workflow from one platform.

What it does

KisanDirect is a cross-platform farmer-to-buyer marketplace and agri-tech ecosystem built for Android, iOS, and Web.

For farmers, the platform provides:

  • Direct produce listing with images, quantity, category, and pricing.
  • Hindi and English voice input for easier listing creation.
  • Live auctions for bulk agricultural produce.
  • AI-based crop recommendations based on soil type and season.
  • Mandi price intelligence with live commodity rates and historical trends.
  • AI-assisted Hold or Sell Now recommendations.
  • A profit estimator for calculating expected agricultural ROI.
  • Access to farming inputs such as seeds, fertilizers, and equipment.
  • Nearby APMC Mandi and cold-storage warehouse discovery.
  • Agricultural news and government-scheme updates.
  • Notifications for orders, auctions, and agricultural updates.

For buyers and wholesalers, KisanDirect provides:

  • Direct sourcing from farmer listings.
  • Category and voice-based search.
  • Transparent pricing and stock information.
  • Direct negotiation and messaging with farmers.
  • Multi-item cart and checkout.
  • Order tracking from pending through delivery.
  • Farmer profiles with ratings and sales information.

The platform also includes a retailer/vendor dashboard for agricultural supply-chain management.

How we built it

KisanDirect was built as a cross-platform application using React Native 0.81.5 and Expo SDK 54, allowing the same application architecture to target Android, iOS, and Web.

The core technology stack includes:

  • React Native + Expo — cross-platform application interface.
  • Firebase Authentication — multi-role authentication for farmers, buyers, and retailers.
  • Firebase Cloud Firestore — real-time database for listings, orders, auctions, and chats.
  • Cloudinary — crop image hosting and optimized media uploads.
  • Data.gov.in Agmarknet API — government Mandi price data.
  • The Guardian Open Platform API — agricultural news ingestion.
  • Expo Location — location-based Mandi discovery.
  • Web Speech API — voice search and speech-to-text functionality.
  • Expo Notifications / Background Tasks — scheduled agricultural news and real-time notifications.
  • React Native SVG and Lucide Icons — dashboards, charts, and interface components.

The application is organized into dedicated screens for the farmer dashboard, marketplace, product creation, checkout, order tracking, auctions, AI crop recommendations, profit estimation, agricultural news, price history, Mandi discovery, warehouses, profiles, and more.

Real-time Firestore subscriptions power live marketplace and transaction updates, while external APIs provide market and news intelligence. The architecture also includes retry and fallback mechanisms so important functionality can remain useful when external services or connectivity are unavailable.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a platform that serves multiple agricultural stakeholders rather than a single user type. Farmers, buyers, wholesalers, and retailers have fundamentally different workflows, so the application required role-based navigation, authentication, dashboards, and marketplace functionality.

Another challenge was dealing with the realities of rural connectivity. A platform that depends entirely on continuously available APIs would become unreliable in low-connectivity environments. We therefore implemented Firestore retry handling and fallback mechanisms for important external services. If the Mandi API is unavailable, regional fallback data can maintain functionality; agricultural news also has a fallback when the news API fails or reaches its quota.

Integrating multiple external services was another challenge. The application combines Firebase, Cloudinary, government Mandi data, news APIs, location services, speech recognition, notifications, and cross-platform React Native functionality.

We also had to design the experience around accessibility. Supporting both Hindi and English across 19 screens, along with voice-based interaction, required the interface and application logic to account for users who may prefer regional-language or voice interaction over traditional text-heavy interfaces.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that KisanDirect goes beyond a basic farmer marketplace and combines commerce, market intelligence, decision support, and agricultural utilities in a single platform.

Some of our key accomplishments include:

  • Building a cross-platform agricultural ecosystem for Android, iOS, and Web.
  • Creating direct farmer-to-buyer produce sourcing.
  • Implementing real-time produce auctions and bid tracking.
  • Integrating government Mandi data for market-price intelligence.
  • Adding AI-assisted crop recommendations and sell-timing guidance.
  • Supporting Hindi and English throughout the application.
  • Adding voice-based product input and search.
  • Building Mandi and cold-storage discovery using location data.
  • Creating an agricultural-input marketplace with inventory synchronization.
  • Implementing real-time order tracking and farmer ratings.
  • Adding resilience mechanisms and fallbacks for unreliable network/API conditions.

Most importantly, we brought these capabilities together rather than treating them as isolated features. The objective is to make KisanDirect a practical digital workspace for farmers, not just an online produce listing platform.

What we learned

Building KisanDirect taught us that solving a real-world problem requires more than implementing individual features.

We learned how important system integration is when building a production-oriented application. Authentication, databases, APIs, media storage, notifications, location services, voice input, and real-time synchronization all need to work together without making the user experience complicated.

We also learned that designing for real users means considering constraints such as connectivity, language, accessibility, and simplicity from the beginning rather than treating them as optional additions.

From a technical perspective, the project gave us practical experience with real-time Firestore synchronization, external API integration, cross-platform React Native development, cloud media management, background tasks, location services, and resilient application design.

Most importantly, we learned that technology becomes more valuable when it is connected to a clear problem. KisanDirect forced us to think about the complete agricultural workflow—from deciding what to grow, to understanding market prices, to selling produce, managing orders, and accessing farming inputs.

What's next for KisanDirect

Our next goal is to move KisanDirect from a strong prototype toward a more scalable agricultural commerce platform.

Future development will focus on:

  • Expanding the number of commodities and regional Mandi data sources.
  • Improving AI recommendations using richer agricultural and market datasets.
  • Adding more sophisticated price forecasting and demand prediction.
  • Expanding farmer verification and marketplace trust mechanisms.
  • Improving logistics and delivery coordination between farmers and buyers.
  • Connecting more warehouses and cold-storage facilities.
  • Expanding regional-language support beyond Hindi and English.
  • Strengthening offline-first functionality for rural connectivity conditions.
  • Adding more agricultural government schemes and personalized eligibility information.
  • Improving analytics for farmers, buyers, wholesalers, and retailers.
  • Scaling the platform to support larger agricultural communities and transaction volumes.

The long-term vision is to make KisanDirect a unified digital infrastructure layer for agricultural commerce and decision-making, helping farmers move from simply selling their produce to making better-informed decisions throughout the farming and selling lifecycle.
