🌾 Inspiration

Agriculture depends heavily on timely decisions about water, weather, and crop conditions. For many Indian farmers, changing weather conditions and limited access to personalized information can make irrigation and crop-management decisions difficult.

We wanted to build a simple digital tool that brings useful agricultural intelligence together in one place — without requiring farmers to understand complicated technology.

That idea led to KisanAI: Smart Irrigation & Crop Intelligence Platform.

💡 What KisanAI Does

KisanAI is an AI-assisted platform designed specifically for Indian farmers.

Farmers can enter their:

  • State / District
  • Crop type
  • Farm size
  • Soil type
  • Preferred language

The platform can also use location and live weather information to provide more context-aware recommendations.

KisanAI generates an AI-powered farm report covering:

  • 💧 Water Management
  • 🌱 Crop Health
  • ✅ Immediate Action Items
  • 🌦️ Weather Conditions & Rain Alerts

The platform also includes a conversational AI assistant that can answer agriculture-related questions and use live weather information when required.

🌍 SDG Alignment

KisanAI primarily supports:

SDG 2 — Zero Hunger

By providing accessible crop and irrigation intelligence, KisanAI aims to support more informed agricultural decision-making and contribute to productive and sustainable farming.

It also connects with:

  • SDG 6 — Clean Water and Sanitation, through smarter water-management decisions.
  • SDG 13 — Climate Action, through weather-aware agricultural planning and more efficient resource use.

🛠️ How We Built It

KisanAI was built as a responsive web application using modern web technologies.

Frontend

  • React
  • TypeScript
  • Tailwind CSS
  • Lucide React

AI

  • Google Gemini
  • @google/genai
  • Gemini structured responses
  • Gemini function calling for weather-related questions

Weather & Location

  • Open-Meteo API
  • BigDataCloud reverse geocoding
  • Browser Geolocation API

Deployment

  • Cloud Run

The application is designed to work across desktop and mobile devices.

⚙️ How It Works

The workflow is simple:

Farmer Details
      ↓
Location & Weather Data
      ↓
Gemini AI Analysis
      ↓
Farm Report
      ↓
Water + Crop Recommendations
      ↓
Actionable Guidance

The weather-aware chat assistant can also use the farm's selected location to retrieve current weather information instead of relying only on static knowledge.

🧠 What We Learned

Building KisanAI taught us that a useful AI application is not just about connecting an AI model to a user interface.

We learned how to:

  • Work with real-time APIs
  • Handle geolocation and reverse geocoding
  • Integrate Gemini into a web application
  • Structure AI-generated responses
  • Connect AI function calling with external tools
  • Design a farmer-focused interface
  • Handle loading and API error states
  • Think about responsible use of AI in real-world applications

🚧 Challenges

One of the biggest challenges was making multiple services work together reliably.

The application combines user input, browser location services, weather APIs, AI-generated recommendations, and conversational AI. Each part can fail independently, so we had to consider cases such as unavailable locations, weather API failures, missing data, and unexpected AI responses.

Another challenge was keeping the interface simple enough for users who may not be familiar with technical terminology.

🚀 Future Vision

KisanAI is currently a prototype, but the platform could be expanded with:

  • Regional crop calendars
  • More Indian languages
  • Soil-moisture sensor integration
  • Satellite and remote-sensing data
  • Crop disease image analysis
  • Historical weather trends
  • Local agricultural advisories
  • Farmer community features
  • Voice-based interaction for easier accessibility

Our long-term vision is to make agricultural intelligence more accessible, practical, and understandable for farmers.

🌱 Final Thought

KisanAI is built around a simple idea: better information can help farmers make better-informed decisions.

By combining AI, weather intelligence, and a farmer-first interface, we hope to make useful agricultural technology more accessible to the people who need it.
