Inspiration

We were inspired by music recommendation forms such as the one offered on Spotify during a new user’s orientation to the platform. Considering the low conversion rates of physical bookstores and the experience that browsing customers at The Avid Reader are looking for, we wanted to help visitors find (and potentially buy) new books.

What it does

JAX (Just Avidly eXploring) is a personalized AI book recommendation system —a native Linux application that is embedded on a kiosk or tablet screen at the store. With JAX, we aim to provide customers with an experience that is simple, but understands the customer enough to offer them book recommendations they enjoy. To ensure this, JAX asks around 10 questions to each customer, which are curated based on their previous responses, and then generates 6 book recommendations with the insight that it has gained about the customer.

How we built it

We used Adobe Illustrator for the main asset (JAX), and Figma for the wireframes

Challenges we ran into

There was a steep learning curve involved in using Figma, as neither of us had experience with it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Making our design vision come to fruition through Figma was very rewarding.

What we learned

We learned more about the frameworks generally used for Project Management, and about how to ideate a solution for a specific client and group of people.

What's next for J.A.X. (Just Avidly eXploring)

If The Avid Reader was interested, we would try to actually build JAX and make the idea a reality.
