Inspiration
We were very interested in Unity after learning about it at our university. When we were brainstorming ideas, we knew that we wanted to connect the ability to create games with a project that would follow the educational or sustainability tracks.
What it does
InvestiGATErs is an educational program that focuses on teaching the player about gate logs. Though our main demographic is small children, anyone with an interest in learning about logic gates can benefit from our game. The user follows Allie the Alligator, or the gator of their choosing, as she makes her way through her home swamp. As Allie swims, she encounters LOGic gates that prompt the user to answer questions in order to pass through them. The overall goal is for the user to unlock the final LOGic gate with all the knowledge they have learned.
How we built it
We built InvestiGATErs using Unity. We utilized multiple Youtube tutorials to help set up the game and game controls. We also used FIGMA to plan out the game. In order to make the log and alligator graphics, we used an online pixelizer to turn pictures into pixel images and used remove.bg to remove the background of those images.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge we ran into was being overwhelmed by all the technology introduced at the plethora of workshops. Though we had a broad idea of what we wanted, we were stuck trying to incorporate too many elements into our project. Nevertheless, we were able to finalize our ideas and create something that we are passionate about.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Since this is our first hackathon, and we are very much beginners, we are proud of the outcome of our project and that we were able to submit it before the deadline.
What we learned
As a team, we have learned about the importance of time management and how to collaborate with each other. We have also gained knowledge from the workshops and talks that we attended.
What's next for investiGATErs
If we were to have more time, we would like to incorporate more questions in each level and successfully convert the entirety of our Figma into reality.
