Inspiration
I have been a avgeek since as long as I can remember. I love to fly and see what's around me by peeking out side the window. It's fun to spot man made and natural features while traveling, or may be just knowing where I am. It's definitely fun, although quite hard to do. That's where I got the idea to build an app which let me see where I am, telemetry data like speed and nearby attractions.
What it does
InTheAir is basically offline maps with ton of cool features. It all starts with loading offline maps. coz this will be mainly be used offline or with limited internet. Once that's done, you're good to go. You can view your current position on the map. Check where you are (city and state) or look for nearby attractions. You can see telemetry data like speed, altitude, climb angle and more.
Further you can add notes anywhere on the app to mark important locations. Or you can use voyage, which once enabled automatically keeps storing your location and telemetry data so that you can view a replay of your journey.
How we built it
This is a completely vibe coded app. I used Gemini CLI to build it. Building the app was actually easy but testing the features and more was difficult. The offline maps can be downloaded from any provider.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Apart from helping me with my obsession with aviation, this helped my cousin and I during during a trek. The internet was limited and thus I used my app to mark down important locations like where we parked our car and important marks which we can see to come back. Further, I was able to explore what's around us and we managed to discover and manage to climb a small mountain as well.
What more can it do?
Coz this is basically offline maps, it can be used anywhere and with multiple other use cased. Thus along with airplanes, this can work in cruises, trains, road trips with limited internet and helping the users during the trek, exploring jungles and more like.
What's next for InTheAir
The next goals for this app is to make it more accurate, add navigations and more.
