Inspiration
With this hack, we wanted to create something that would help empower women as they navigated the workplace climate, and found that we had successfully conceptualized a tool that could be used to help a variety of marginalized groups as well.
What it does
On the surface, illume serves one purpose: To inform its users about the culture and moral character of the companies that they could possibly be employed at. It accomplishes this in two ways that eventually come together to provide the user with the most complete picture. The first aspect is user generated ratings and impressions. These allow for essential firsthand anecdotes and sentiments that can be disseminated to the hiring populace. The second aspect is curated analysis of current events and company history, which is done by illume staff. The two of these aspects come together to form the illume Score, which functions as an easy way for users to gain a quick understanding of how well a company upholds a positive workplace culture.
How we built it
We designed and created a wireframe in Figma, then built the website using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
Challenges we ran into
Search function and authentication took longer than expected, we ended up putting those on pause so we could focus on a presentable demo that pitches our product accurately.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the overall look and feel of illume, we think it's would make users feel welcomed and heard. Also we are very excited about the potential illume has for future women in tech given the recent backlash against gender equality in the workplace.
What we learned
We learned that it would be more efficient to utilize templates and open source materials that we can find on the internet.
What's next for illume - workplace empowerment
We will continue to develop illume and work on a better search function, user authentication & profile, and adding more content to the site.
