Inspiration

In 2023, over 1 in 4 Canadians were involved in the gig economy. While options like Uber and Fiverr exist, Uber focuses primarily on delivery and taxi services, whereas Fiverr requires strong technical skills like programming or design to have any success. Jobs like lawn mowing, snow shoveling, and car detailing are neglected by these services, so people end up having to market their services themselves. One of our friends runs a local car detailing business, and she often tells us that the most difficult part of the business is finding clientele. Since her business is not that large, people who would want their cars detailed would never find her services and have to seek out other more expensive branded options. This made us realize the need for an app to connect local people who need services with their respective providers.

What it does

Our app will provide 3 different features: 1. A place to list jobs Scenario: Bob just came back from a long day of work and his driveway was filled with snow, instead of finding someone else to shovel the snow for him, he simply opens up Husi and creates a listing that everyone in his local area will see, thus connecting him to his entire community and efficiently finding him a service provider. 2. An opportunity to make a income on the side Scenario: Bob is a high school student, but he does not get enough hours at his job. Instead of finding a new job, Bob can simply find local, convenient jobs suited to him using the Husi app. 3. A way to make your services known in your community Scenario: Bob has a power jet and powerwashes peoples' driveways; he is having difficulty finding clients going door to door. To avoid having to go to hundreds of houses himself, he lists his service on Husi and people in his local area will see the service he provides, along with his price and experience, therefore automatically connecting him to people in need of his service.

How we built it

Realizing the time constraint of this hackathon, we decided to develop a mockup that we can leverage after this hackathon is complete. We began on Jamboard by jotting down ideas and creating general mockups. Once we had an idea of what the final product should look like, we went on figma and designed each page from scratch. After the figma was close to complete, we still had some extra time and wanted to get something coded in for the hackathon. Since we both have a lot of experience in web development, we decided to create and launch a website that we can use as a launch site for the app.

Challenges we ran into

This was the first time either of us used Figma, so we spent some time getting used to the app. Organizing layers and locking things when we were done was one of the most important things for this because often times we would accidentally delete things without realizing it and have to redo them. Also, we have never worked on a programming project together, so we had to figure out how to set up Github with VSCode which was more difficult than we expected, but once we figured that out, developing the website was not difficult.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The mockups we have created are very detailed and look exactly like what we want our app to look like. We are proud of how they look, and we have already begun working on creating this into an actual app. Additionally, we were able to get a domain and launch our website using Netlify, which was a major accomplishment for us.

What we learned

Learning how to use Github to work on projects simultaneously is one of our key takeaways from this hackathon. Additionally, we both learned how to launch websites onto a domain and got more familiar with using Figma to create mockups.

What's next for Husi

We are going to develop an iOS app using the mockups we created for this hackathon and pitch it at competitions like the Diamond Challenge.
