Inspiration

The project began with the recognition that our experience with mobile app design had often been limited to UX/UI interfaces and wanted a change of pace by trying to make something new to us, a mobile game. We drew inspiration from a random conversation about Night at the Museum that started with a vinyl ghost sticker on one of our laptops. That's what began our brainstorming and eventually lead us to creating HUGO.

What it does

HUGO is a mobile game meant for all ages with the purpose of exploring themes relating to mistakes one may make throughout their life. The current version extends to level one to a potential seven, all exploring various themes about the lived experience.

How we built it

HUGO was completely built in Figma with the visual components made in Adobe Illustrator. We aimed to create a game for all ages while still aiming to tell a story about human experiences. The game is comprised of several screens including a home screen, settings menu, color map (stage selection), as well as the three puzzles featured in the prototype. We made use of Figma's component features in creating simulations of point-and-click and combination passcode puzzles.

Challenges we ran into

This is our first Hackathon and our first time using Figma as the main application for designing an app interface. We faced challenges in putting together the puzzle games within the framework of Figma. This extends into the trouble we had in creating an easy to navigate interface that did not break.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Some things we're proud of is making a functional game on Figma that allows the player to slowly put together the main character's narrative under a time constraint.

What we learned

We learned the capabilities and limitations when working in Figma using components, variants, prototyping, and animating.

What's next for HUGO

With level one established, we managed to create a visual system to tell the story of HUGO. What happens next is completing the rest of the story and making the app more user friendly.
