Inspiration

The amount of food that is being wasted every day on a college campus is appalling. The piles of food that get thrown out, untouched, motivated us to create an app that would fight food waste and enable Rice students to be more conscious of their actions. We were also inspired by our own and our peers' experiences living off-campus this year: firstly, there is no time to cook a proper meal, and secondly, the inability to cook or acquire decent food encourages students to engage in dishonest behavior– accessing the servery without purchasing a meal plan. Lastly, the campus app "Owl Nest," was a source of inspiration. Owl Nest connects students to events and clubs on campus; Hoot for Food also serves to bring students together, but this time through food.

What it does

“Hoot for Food,” serves to fight food waste on the Rice campus by selling leftover food at a discounted price or by giving it out for free. This sustainable approach also enables off-campus students to have easy access to food which saves them both time and money.

How we built it

We used Figma, Adobe Illustrator, and Adobe After Effects. Adobe After Effects was used for all the animations, and Adobe Illustrator was used for all of the graphics.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into the challenge of not having enough time to interview chefs and the dining staff. We mostly gathered our data from the experiences of our peers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud of the complex animations we were able to create in a short time frame. The interface is also clean, intuitive, and functional.

What we learned

We learned how to generate an idea that is multi-functional. In our case, it focuses on sustainability, community engagement/socialization, and supporting campus services.

What's next for Hoot for Food

We will conduct more extensive user research, interview the dining staff, and make quantitative notes of how much food is going to waste.
