About the Project

Himalayan Multi-Sensor Route & Rescue Intelligence System

The Himalayan region, particularly Kashmir, faces frequent natural hazards such as landslides, flash floods, avalanches, rockfalls and sudden road blockages. These hazards can put travellers at risk and delay emergency rescue operations. Delayed or incomplete road-condition information makes it difficult to identify safer routes during emergencies.

Our proposed Himalayan Multi-Sensor Route & Rescue Intelligence System aims to improve mountain road safety through Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), GPS, weather information and drone-based monitoring.

The system combines available environmental data, sensor readings and road-condition observations to assess potential hazards along individual road segments. An AI-based risk assessment module classifies road sections into different risk levels and displays them on an interactive map.

When a road segment is identified as high-risk or blocked, the system can recommend an alternative route for travellers and emergency response teams, provided reliable road-condition data is available.

Key Features

  • Multi-Sensor Monitoring: Integrates vibration, weather and other relevant sensor data.
  • AI-Based Hazard Assessment: Analyses available information to estimate road-segment risk.
  • Interactive Risk Map: Displays safe, caution and high-risk sections.
  • Rescue Route Recommendation: Identifies alternative routes around reported hazards.
  • Emergency Alerts: Provides hazard notifications to support timely decisions.

Proposed Implementation

The initial prototype will use Python, a web-based mapping dashboard and simulated or real sensor data. It will demonstrate how changing environmental conditions affect road-risk assessments and how the route planner responds to hazardous or blocked road segments.

Expected Impact

The project aims to support safer travel, improve situational awareness and help emergency teams make better-informed route decisions in mountainous regions. Its initial focus is on Himalayan roads, with potential applications in other landslide- and flood-prone areas.

Our long-term vision is to develop a practical, scalable intelligence platform for mountain-road monitoring and disaster-response support.
