We're beginners in the world of game development and would like to enter this Hackathon under that category.

We wanted to create a game that would be easy to use yet fun to play. We were inspired to make this game from the lack of difficult and entertaining shooters.

What it does

For Hack3, we created a 2D desktop arcade game, designed for recreational use. The goal of the game is to defeat the two samurai bosses. We developed a storyline for the game to make it more unique compared to other shooter games. The player controls a character with a gun. A mysterious man in a purple hoodie, his only purpose in life is to defeat the samurai roaming the Japanese-style area. Amongst cherry blossom trees and mountains, he risks his life to save the world.

To shoot, the player left-clicks with his or her mouse. The player can dash by holding down shift and clicking at the same time. The “bosses”, aka the samurais, use ranged melee, with a combination of both katana slicing and long-distance firing of weapons. They follow the player, who has no choice but to shoot for dear life at the powerful samurai.

It is the year 2052. Four years ago, the president was assassinated by a good-turned-evil legendary samurai known as Kobayakawa Hideyoshi.

You are the son of Kobayakawa Hideyoshi. You are the only person in the world who not only knows his ways around a gun, but also knows the ins and outs of samurai life.

The world has gone corrupt. And with every year that passes, the fate of humanity creeps closer.

With this knowledge in hand, you set out to do the impossible—defeat your father, the leader of the United States.

How we built it

We created this game on Godot. We drew most of our own sprites—the player, trees, petals, rocks, and mountains are all our creations. We implemented A* navigation for our enemies AI and we tried to make the game difficult. The game has little playtime but turns to be a difficult challenge that makes you want to play it over and over again. We were inspired to make this game from the lack of difficult and entertaining shooters. The arcade style is a lot of fun for its simplicity and we enjoyed playing while we made it.

Challenges we ran into

Inexperience, especially concerning game development. It was tough to learn Godot and create a functioning game using it within 24 hours. Asset creation was also difficult, as we had to make sure the sprites would animate smoothly, and the assets need to all come together in one theme. None of us are artists, so creating assets was a new, difficult, but interesting task.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are quite proud of creating a fun-to-play game in under 24 hours. The fact that most of the assets were our creation brings us joy, as we can truly call the game ours. Since this is the first game we made, we're pretty proud of how far we've come in such little time, and we hope to pursue game development in the future.

What we learned

We learned a lot about Godot and game development in general. We also learned about asset creation and what it takes to make a sprite look like it's moving smoothly. We learned about how different aspects of a game can tie the entire program together and make our ideas come to life, and it was truly a joy for us to familiarize ourselves with the process of creating a game.

What's next for Hideyoshi

We hope to add more levels to the game, along with more bosses. We plan to extend the storyline so that the encounter between the player and his father is more emotional and exciting. Hopefully, in the future, this will become a full-fledged game that people across the world can play and enjoy.
