Inspiration

Disease outbreaks are often detected only after hospitals begin receiving large numbers of patients, leaving little time for early intervention. At the same time, many people spend hours moving from one pharmacy to another searching for medicines without knowing where they are available. We wanted to solve both problems with a single platform that benefits patients, pharmacies, and public health authorities.

What it does

PRISM AI is a web and mobile platform that enables pharmacies to update their medicine inventory and sales in real time. Patients can search for medicines, compare nearby pharmacies, reserve medicines, and navigate directly to pharmacies with available stock.

Behind the scenes, AI analyzes medicine demand across pharmacies. When it detects unusual spikes in purchases of specific medicines in a particular area, it generates early warning alerts that can help health authorities identify potential disease outbreaks and respond faster.

How we built it

Our planned architecture consists of a React web application and a mobile application connected to a Node.js and Express backend with MongoDB as the database. AI models analyze pharmacy sales trends to identify abnormal medicine demand patterns and generate outbreak alerts. We also integrate mapping services to help patients locate nearby pharmacies.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a solution that protects patient privacy while still providing meaningful public health insights. Another challenge was determining how AI could accurately distinguish between normal seasonal increases in medicine demand and unusual patterns that may indicate an outbreak.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We designed a solution that addresses two important problems simultaneously: helping patients quickly access medicines and providing an AI-powered early warning system for disease surveillance. We believe this creates value for communities, pharmacies, and health authorities alike.

What we learned

This project reinforced the importance of using AI to support decision-making rather than replace it. We also learned more about public health surveillance, data integration, and designing systems that can have a real social impact.

What's next for PRISM AI

We plan to integrate hospitals, laboratories, and national health agencies to improve outbreak detection accuracy. Future versions will include SMS and USSD support for communities without smartphones, predictive medicine demand forecasting, multilingual support, and integration with existing health information systems across the region.

posted an update —

We're building PRISM, an AI-powered platform that helps communities respond faster to public health risks by combining real-time pharmacy data with intelligent disease trend analysis.

Our goal is to make medicine easier to find while helping health authorities detect potential outbreaks before they escalate.

Looking forward to sharing our progress!
