Inspiration
Have A Nice Day was inspired by the quiet moments of our morning routines-- the textures, sounds, and habits that sets the tone for the day that follows. The morning routine is universally experienced but deeply personal to the individual.
What it does
We wanted to encapsulate the textile sensations of selecting clothes and feeling different fabrics, the acoustic atmosphere of shower steam and clinking jewelry, the experience of cooking breakfast, and the hazy awareness of navigating a familiar space while half-awake. While these experiences aren’t just incidental, as they form the crucial transition that mentally prepares us for the day ahead, they are often overlooked and performed on autopilot. We wanted to bring light to these experiences and take the time to enjoy them. Our intent is to have users rediscover the sensations of these daily activities that are often reduced to be purely functional. We want to create a mindful and personalized space, and capture ephemeral moments that often get overlooked. Maintaining this connection to physical sensations in an increasingly digital world is our end goal that hopefully users get to enjoy in our prototype.
How we built it
The initial start of our project was brainstorming standout sensations in the process of getting ready. What senses could we replicate in a digital process without the actual sense of touch and having a physical body. We gravitated towards experiences that satisfied the sense of sound and sight, which revealed the challenge of how to translate these experiences without losing the essential qualities.
Our screens refer to key sensory moments in the morning, designed to augment rather than replace physical experiences. For example, our mirror screen captures the soft pleasure of drawing on foggy glass, or our closet screen encapsulates the different textures of clothing and the musical intonations of jewelry. We used ambient sound clips, and textures to recreate these experiences.
Challenges we ran into
We tried to preserve the "transitional" quality of morning routines. It was a challenge to make our animations and interactions not only intuitive but also quiet. Our screens deliberately avoid harshness, using soft transitions, ambient sound, and responsive design that accommodates the half-awake state many people experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our greatest achievement was transforming an intangible idea into a physical prototype that promotes awareness and gratitude for everyday routines. It served as a helpful reminder to us—and hopefully to our users—that it's worthwhile to take your time and appreciate the little things in life.
What we learned
We learned how to preserve the emotional depth of sensory experiences while converting them into digital experiences. It forced us to consider the emotional impact of sound, images, and interaction more carefully. We also developed a greater understanding of how design might assist people in reestablishing connections with the delicate, transitional moments that occur in everyday life.
What's next for Have A Nice Day
Beyond mornings, we would like to look into additional routines that are often forgotten throughout the day, such as winding down at night. Our ultimate goal is to transform this into a more complete digital wellness tool that promotes mindfulness in ordinary routines.
