72% of College Student shopped fast fashion in 2022! And we want to change that.

What it does

GreenGuru is a Chrome extension that empowers users to make sustainable shopping decisions. It offers an A-F sustainability rating system, helping users quickly assess the environmental impact of products. The extension also includes a price comparison feature, suggesting more affordable, eco-friendly alternatives. With AI-powered recommendations, users are shown similar, sustainable products, while the extension provides in-depth explanations of sustainability metrics to ensure informed choices.

How we built it

We started by designing our logo using Adobe Illustrator to create a clean, recognizable brand identity. For the prototyping phase, we used Figma to create both low-fidelity and mid-fidelity prototypes, allowing us to iterate quickly and refine the user experience. We also designed the user flows on Miro, which helped us map out the user journey and ensure a seamless, intuitive experience across the extension. These tools allowed us to efficiently collaborate and bring our vision to life before moving into the development phase.

Challenges we ran into

One of the biggest challenges we faced was time management. With a tight timeline, balancing design iterations, user testing, and collaboration between team members proved to be difficult. We had to ensure that we stayed on track while refining features based on feedback, which sometimes led to adjustments in our initial plans. Managing multiple tasks and ensuring that each phase of the project design, was completed within deadlines required careful coordination and flexibility from the entire team.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re particularly proud of creating a seamless, user-friendly experience that combines sustainability with affordability. The integration of real-time price comparison alongside sustainability scores is something that’s rarely seen in similar tools. Additionally, we’re proud of our AI-powered product recommendations that can personalize the shopping experience based on user preferences while promoting sustainability. Finally, our ability to ensure that the extension works efficiently even under heavy traffic or large datasets is a significant achievement.

What we learned

We learned the importance of user research throughout the development process. Conducting thorough research helped us better understand user preferences, behaviors, and pain points, which informed our design and feature decisions. We also recognized the need for continuous user feedback and iterations to ensure the extension is both intuitive and meets user needs. Additionally, we discovered that clear communication among designers was crucial for maintaining a cohesive vision and translating design concepts.

What's next for GreenGuru

The next step for GreenGuru is the implementation phase. We will be handing off our design assets, including UI/UX wireframes, user flows, and visual designs, to the engineering team for development. Additionally, the project will be handed over to the Product Manager (PM) to ensure alignment on product goals, timelines, and feature priorities. During this phase, we’ll work closely with the engineering team to ensure that the designs are translated effectively into the final product. We will also prioritize user testing and feedback to refine and optimize the extension before its official launch.

Handoff

Anticipating that we would hand off our design assets to a team of engineers and a PM what would we take note of? for a pm: * Focus on user load simulations during performance testing to ensure optimal speed under real-world conditions. * Define KPIs like conversion rates, user engagement, and time spent on recommendations to assess feature performance. for engineers: * Integrate reliable sustainability data for product rankings and explanations. * Ensure data sources are accurate and up-to-date for effective scoring and product assessment.

  • Performance Testing
    • Conduct tests to ensure the extension loads quickly and does not disrupt page performance.
    • Optimize backend and frontend to handle data seamlessly without delays.
