Inspiration

Originally we wanted to make a site that would find the closet piece of grass to a user, but instead we pivoted to a webapp that rewards people for standing in grass

What it does

The app tracks the users location as they move, and checks if they lie within an area defined as grass. When a user is on grass there score will increase for every second they stand in grass.

How we built it

To get the location of grass, we used OpenStreetMap tags to get location of grass in an area around LSU. We used OSM tags for features with grass plus things like parks, golf courses, sports fields. We display the players location and the grass on a imbedded map using Leaflet.js, which displays a OSM map with layers and markers that can be repositioned. Finally we used Turf.js to calculate if the user's coordinates lie within a polygon for a grass area.

Challenges we ran into

We have no webdev experience before this so we struggled a lot with just using JS with HTML. We also would like if there was more grass area data we could have access to. We also never got our firebase database fully working, since we couldn't figure out how to update the users score for the database.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

It does detect if your device location is in an area of grass and it gives you score. We were also able to get users added to the database, but since the score never gets saved it doesn't do much

What we learned

We learned a lot about the basics of web development, and also how to access and display data using OpenStreetMap.
