Inspiration
As a developer who frequently shares gaming clips and memes on Discord, I was frustrated by the current landscape of GIF makers. Most existing apps are bloated with ads, require account creation, upload your personal media to the cloud, or force expensive subscriptions. I wanted to build a lightning-fast, single-screen utility where anyone could import a short video, trim it, add a meme caption, and export it instantly—all processed 100% locally on the device for maximum privacy.
How I built it
I built Gifify Studio entirely using SwiftUI to ensure a clean, modern, and fluid user interface that requires zero onboarding. For the core engine, I utilized native iOS media frameworks to handle precise video trimming, text overlay rendering, and GIF conversion locally.
For monetization, I wanted to respect the user. I designed a "value-first" freemium model where users get 3 free, fully functional exports every day. To handle the premium upgrade, I integrated the RevenueCat SDK. It powers a straightforward $1.99 "Lifetime Pro" non-consumable in-app purchase that removes the daily limit.
Challenges I faced
- Media Optimization: Finding the perfect compression balance was tricky. I had to heavily optimize the rendering engine to ensure the "Discord Optimized" preset consistently output high-quality GIFs under the strict 10MB file limit.
- App Store Review: My frictionless paywall UX actually backfired during the initial Apple App Store review! The reviewer rejected the app (Guideline 2.1b) because they couldn't locate the In-App Purchase. I had to appeal and explain that the paywall is intentionally hidden until the user's 4th export attempt to avoid aggressively spamming them upon first launch.
What I learned
Building Gifify Studio deepened my expertise in native media processing and SwiftUI state management. Most importantly, it completely shifted my perspective on app monetization. Setting up entitlements for a lifetime purchase via RevenueCat took a fraction of the time compared to writing custom StoreKit receipt validation. It taught me that implementing payments doesn't have to be a massive backend hurdle, allowing me to focus my energy strictly on building a great core product.
