Inspiration
We wanted to create something fun yet educational. We found that sustainability (and more generally environmentalism) was a topic we wanted to promote, so we themed our game around it.
What it does
Fruition is a simple tree growing simulator. The game takes 5 minutes to play, and during that time the player must fertilize the soil and water a tree for it to fully grow. It features random events that occur every 30 seconds.
How we built it
The game is built in Unity. Sprites are made in Adobe Illustrator, ibisPaint, and Paint.NET. Some sprites were imported from open art websites.
Challenges we ran into
This is our first hackathon, and so the pressure of only having 24 hours was a big obstacle for us. We had to cut a lot of features we wanted in order to complete the game. It also took us quite a bit of time to come up with all the mechanics for the game.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Although fairly simple, we're quite happy with the design of the game. The events add enough variety to the fairly uniform gameplay and make it enjoyable for its short duration.
What we learned
This project allowed us to get a taste of what it's like to develop a game. We also learned how to work with others and collaborate to make something better than anything we could have created if we worked by ourselves.
What's next for Fruition
If given more time, we would have added more events to add even more variety to the game. We also want to improve on the art of the game, since it wasn't a priority during our development.
