Inspiration: Buffalo is one of the poorest cities in America, with over 45% of people living below the poverty line and 12% of Erie County residents struggling with food insecurity. Meanwhile, businesses throw away perfectly good food, contributing to over 50% of all food waste in America. This unacceptable imbalance inspired FoodToU.
What We Learned: We realized that while some platforms address food waste, they fall short in accessibility and efficiency. Buffalo’s unique challenges, including economic and racial segregation, require a community-driven solution.
How We Built It: FoodToU is an AI-powered app that connects businesses with surplus food to individuals and organizations in need. We designed features like:
Real-time food matching based on location, urgency, and dietary needs.
Personalized food notifications and interactive Google Maps for efficient pickups.
AI-powered analytics helping businesses track waste, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact.
Challenges Faced:
Ensuring real-time efficiency for food distribution.
Building AI algorithms to balance supply and demand.
Designing a user-friendly interface for businesses and recipients.
What Makes Us Different:
Free for individuals and nonprofits.
AI insights on waste trends and cost savings for businesses.
Focused on Buffalo’s specific needs with scalable potential.
Together, we can turn waste into hope and hunger into nourishment.
