Inspiration

Flooding and waterlogging can make everyday journeys difficult and unsafe, especially when residents are unaware of which roads are affected. We wanted to build a solution that helps communities share information about these incidents and identify locations where flooding repeatedly occurs.

What it does

FloodLens is a community-powered flood reporting platform. Residents can report waterlogged roads and blocked drains by submitting a location, photograph, and description. These reports appear on an interactive map, while hotspot detection helps identify areas with clusters of incidents. A dashboard summarizes reports, and rainfall information provides additional context. Users can also view reported hazards near suggested walking routes.

How we built it

We built FloodLens using React for the frontend, Supabase to store incident reports and photos, and OpenStreetMap for the interactive map. We implemented a hotspot detection algorithm to group nearby reports and identify potential problem areas. Weather API integration provides rainfall information where available.

Challenges we ran into

One of the main challenges was integrating the OpenStreetMap API and allowing users to choose a point on the Map to file a report. Other than that, the project was successful.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of all the features, especially the flood reporting feature that we have implemented. Additionally, building the Incident dashboard was a major success for our project.

What we learned

This was our first time using the OpenStreetMap API and implementing this API was something we learned while building the project.

What's next for FloodLens

We hope to improve report verification, and in the future we want to add features to help residents and local organizations identify recurring flooding problems and prioritize areas that need attention.
