🛠️ FixIt Pro – Intelligent Device Diagnostics & Repair Assistant Inspiration Millions of people experience device problems every day, from smartphones with failing batteries to laptops that overheat and household appliances that suddenly stop working. Most users face three challenges: • They don't know what the actual problem is. • They don't know whether the issue is serious. • They don't know whether a repair is worth the cost. As a result, many devices are discarded prematurely, unnecessary repair costs are incurred, and valuable time is wasted searching through forums and videos. I built FixIt Pro to make troubleshooting more accessible by providing users with clear diagnostics, repair guidance, and actionable recommendations through a simple web interface.

What it does FixIt Pro is an intelligent device diagnostics platform that helps users understand device issues before seeking professional repair services. Users can: • Select a device type • Describe a problem in natural language • Receive a diagnosis • View likely causes • Follow beginner, intermediate, and advanced repair steps • Assess issue severity • Estimate repair costs • Determine repair success probability • Understand when professional assistance is recommended The platform also captures diagnostic events, user feedback, and usage statistics to support monitoring and continuous improvement.

How I built it FixIt Pro was built using: • HTML • CSS • JavaScript • Node.js • Express.js • JSON-based knowledge base • Render (backend deployment) • Netlify (frontend deployment) The architecture consists of: Frontend A responsive web interface that allows users to submit symptoms and view structured diagnostic reports. Backend A diagnostic engine that analyzes symptoms using a repair knowledge base and generates recommendations. Intelligence Layer The system combines: • Symptom matching • Rule-based reasoning • Risk assessment • Severity scoring • Repair recommendation generation • Feedback collection This approach ensures reliable diagnostics while remaining fully functional without requiring expensive external AI services.

Splunk & Observability One of the core goals of FixIt Pro is observability. Every diagnosis generates structured event data including: • Device type • User-reported symptom • Diagnosis result • Severity level • Confidence score • User feedback These events can be analyzed to: • Identify common device failures • Detect usage trends • Improve diagnostic accuracy • Monitor platform performance • Generate operational insights This aligns directly with Splunk's mission of transforming machine-generated data into actionable intelligence. Rather than simply diagnosing devices, FixIt Pro creates a foundation for data-driven improvement and smarter decision-making.

Challenges I Ran Into Developing FixIt Pro involved several challenges: • Frontend rendering issues • Diagnosis display bugs • Backend communication failures • Error handling edge cases • State management problems • Deployment configuration issues One of the biggest challenges involved AI integration. Initially, external AI APIs were considered for diagnosis enhancement. However, API costs, usage limits, and reliability concerns created risks for a hackathon environment. To address this, I redesigned the system around a local intelligence layer and structured knowledge base. This improved reliability, reduced dependencies, and ensured the platform could function consistently during demonstrations.

Accomplishments That I'm Proud Of • Built a complete full-stack diagnostics platform • Created a structured repair knowledge base • Implemented multi-device troubleshooting workflows • Added repair cost estimation and severity scoring • Developed a reliable local intelligence layer • Implemented feedback tracking and analytics • Integrated observability concepts aligned with Splunk • Successfully deployed both frontend and backend for public use

What I Learned Through this project, I gained experience in: • Full-stack web development • Diagnostic system design • Observability concepts • Event logging and analytics • API design • User experience design • Reliability engineering • Cloud deployment Most importantly, I learned that solving a real user problem effectively is often more valuable than adding unnecessary complexity.

What's Next for FixIt Pro Future improvements include: • Expanded repair knowledge base • Image-assisted diagnostics • Voice-based troubleshooting • Predictive maintenance recommendations • Device health monitoring • Multi-language support • Mobile application development • Advanced analytics dashboards • Real-time observability integrations The long-term vision is to make device troubleshooting more accessible, affordable, and data-driven while helping reduce unnecessary repair costs and electronic waste.
