Inspiration

When we first started fishing, we had two problems: we never knew where the fish were, and we didn't know anyone to fish with. Forum posts were days old, and the experienced anglers at the lake were strangers. We wanted an app that tells beginners where the fish are biting right now, and helps them meet the people who know.

What it does

FishPulse is a real-time community fishing map.

  • Live hotspots: share where fish are biting in 3 taps. It appears on everyone's map in under a second, then fades after 30 minutes.
  • Privacy built in: "Rough area" mode shares a ~300 m zone instead of your exact spot.
  • One-tap navigation: open any hotspot in Google Maps.
  • AI Fish ID: snap a photo and get the species, saved as a collectible catch card.
  • The Ocean: a community feed where catch cards float up from an animated sea.
  • Friends & chat: add an angler from their profile and chat live once they accept.

How we built it

React + TypeScript + Vite with MapLibre GL and Motion on the front end. Supabase provides Postgres, Realtime and auth. Every permission is enforced with Row-Level Security. A Supabase Edge Function calls Fishial.ai, so API keys never reach the browser. Hosted on Vercel.

Challenges we ran into

  • Getting realtime to deliver reliably, including the first event right after sign-in.
  • Placing pins accurately while the map camera was still animating.
  • Balancing privacy and usefulness for shared locations.
  • Writing every security rule as a database policy, then testing it from multiple simulated devices.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Reports reach other phones in well under a second.
  • A full loop in one hackathon: find fish → navigate → catch → identify → share → make a friend.
  • It's cute and fun to use, which matters for beginners.

What we learned

Real-time apps live or die on small details, and designing for privacy early shapes the whole product.

What's next for FishPulse

Fishing crews with group chat, nearby-bite alerts, push notifications, and more species.
